| Helianthus Species Helianthus debilis Helianthus is the Sunflower-which can not take cold. There are so many different kinds! If you want a perennial, that reminds you of Coreopsis, but it grows 4 -5 feet tall--try Heliopsis! They are 3-5 inch golden yellow flowers and bloom till frost. I am in Mass. and even this past winter with hardly any snow-that protects the little guys--they are coming up!! Any kind of soil, I add compost at the beginning,but sometimes i forget and they still come up.. So, I would guess just about any state can grow them.
