| Metasequoia Species Metasequoia glyptostroboides This listing is for information only about our experience with this plant. Excuse if not appropriate for this category. We have 4 approx. 13 years old. (they were about 5 feet tall when planted in 1999 (Now 2009)) The largest is 9"DBH and 30-35' tall, 15' wide at base. It was transplanted about 7 years ago when it was about 12-15'. It has been trimmed of its lowest branches twice. The lowest now are about 40" off the ground. The trunk shape is quite similar to eastern red cedar, no deep furrows, but some root leaders going up the sides. We like the "normal tree" look. A side note about resilience: Last winter we had a really bad ice storm. As many as 80-90% of all trees in our yard and woods (215 acres) lost large branches and some lost their tops. These are mature,(20-36"DBH) White Oak, Red Oak, Beech, Hickory, and Poplar. Note broken limbs from ice storm on Hickory trees behind the Dawn Redwood. All 4 Dawns' top 6 feet or so were bent double and pointing straight down. They all recovered after the ice melted with no damage. Our favorite along with White Oak. | Plants | ![]() (PlantFiles) |
