| Jatropha Species Jatropha podagrica I have owned this plant for several years. In that amount of time I have moved three times (all within 50 miles of Central Florida), and each time dragging this potted plant around with me. I have never re-potted it from the original time of purchase, although I probably should because I don't know how long it was in the original container. When I bought this plant I wasn't told what the commercial name of it was, but I'm now aware that it is commonly called "Buddha Belly". Each time I moved this plant it survived, but I have now found the ideal location for it. I live in an semi-tropical area called Tampa, Florida (blazing sun and high humidity). I have found it best to give it 60-70% direct sunlight during the day (even in the summer). No watering until I see the leaves looking a little droopy. It's true about the seed pods bursting open and spreading their contents of up to 4' in distance. Butterflies love the flower, I think the neon red color attracts them. I have always kept this plant in a container and think that it likes its roots being bound/contained. This may be where some people may be having difficulty with successful growing, for this is a very simple plant to grow if given the right location and proper care. When I bought this plant the seller told me that it is originally from Africa, and that in the right conditions the base gets so big that people actually use it as a seat; therefore, the gigantic leaves act as an umbrella to keep the blazing sun off their back. | Seeds, Plants | ![]() (PlantFiles) |
