This humble little green with its cute little white flowers is a prolific self-seeder. It prefers part sun to shade, and gets stressed in very hot locations, at which point is a target for mites and aphids. It has a buttery flavor when young, until the stronger flavor at maturity makes it unappealing. It makes a nice edible groundcover at about 3 - 4 inches at its highest. According to Wikipedia, the Japanese make some of their cuisine with it, and if I am not mistaken, it was brought to North America by the settlers.

I know many people think "weed" whenever they see a dandelion, but it is just one of those plants God keeps shoving under our noses because it has such powerful medicinal qualities. It boosts the immune system, stimulates bile production, has potent detoxification qualities, and can help ease constipation. I believe it deserves a place in every edible landscape. It attracts tiger swallowtails, bumblebees, ants, and beneficial wasps, and it penetrates hard, compacted soils with its taproot.
