Agastache coccinea x mexicana x rupestris 1 gal. perennial from DVC plant sale 04/02/11. Blooms summer through late fall. Big hummer attractor, needs full sun, 4' high, 3' wide. Water often when first planted, less so (once weekly in hot summer areas) as it becomes established. Prune in Spring. Magenta - purple pink blooms. Provenance: I believe this coccinea x mexicana x rupestris. Once established, it likes to be watered at long intervals during a really dry summer; otherwise this low-maintance relative of the sages asks for no attention & thrives in a droughty sun garden. | 'Pink Panther' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |

| Aloysia Species Aloysia triphylla One 4" pot from Navlet's Danville; healthy seedling, 2 fine stalks leafing out. Full sun, average water. Slow grower to 3' or more (1 friend trained hers to be a standard, like a rose standard, a large round of pale green leaves at the top). Some say the most lemony scent in the herbal kingdom. Good for tea, I use leaves when making homemade limoncello - really adds a lemony kick to the simple syrup. Prune at end of growing season; loves the hot summer sun. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Amaranthus Species Amaranthus caudatus 6-pack from DVC plant sale. Annual which can top 3' with 2' spread, if happy; needs sun and heat to perform, but not fussy about soil. Open long green foliage. Am planting among lettuces to shade them on hot summer days. Flowers resemble magenta dreadlocks - quite stunning. The grain, a staple in the Aztec world, is supposed to be delish - the seeds are heated till they pop then used in as one would use quinoa. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |

| Hot Pepper Capsicum Annuum 4" pot w/2 plants from OSH. Full sun, 24-36" tall, space 18-24" apart. Annual. Fruit 2-6" tapering. Hot peppers prefer a little dryer soil than sweet peppers, but all peppers have shallow roots; mulch is a good idea. One source says these only go to 2' tall and 2' across - we'll see. Compatible Plants: Tomatoes, asparagus, carrots, cucumbers, okra, onions and eggplants are traditionally regarded as good companions for pepper plants. Several perennial herbs are also compatible with peppers, including chives, garlic, marjoram, oregano; annual or biennial herbs include parsley and sweet basil. Tall companions to peppers such as tomato plants, okra and eggplant can provide pepper plants with protection from the wind. Carrots and onions share space well and enhance the flavor of the peppers. Nasturtiums and alyssum are good as well. Incompatible Plants: Kohlrabi and fennel are incompatible with sweet pepper plants, and do not plant peppers near apricot trees. Avoid planting hot peppers with beans or members of the cabbage family (brassicas). | 'Chile de Arbol' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Chile Pepper Capsicum annuum 4" pot w/2 plants from OSH. Full sun, 18-24" tall, space 24-36" apart. Annual 58-68 days (early). Also known as Ancho Chili. Bell shaped fruit 4-6" tapering, green ripening to red. Have grown this before - sometimes they are very mild (no heat at all), sometimes they are mildly hot and sometimes very hot! Hot peppers prefer a little dryer soil than sweet peppers, but all peppers have shallow roots; mulch is a good idea. Some growers recommend pulling off the first few blossoms until they've been in the ground a week or so, as this develops a better root system, yielding greater number of fruit later on. | Ceratostigma Species Ceratostigma plumbaginoides Dwarf Plumbago (common name) erroneously listed in Dave's Garden as Leadwort, i.e., Plumbago species whereas this is a different genus and species. 2-1 gal. pots from DVC plant sale; 12" tall, 24" spread. Shade in our hot summer area, trails well acc. to DVC folks, so good for container plant in shaded patio area; may need more sun than is available on patio - check plants to see how they do in that location. Used as groundcover, deep green leaves, brilliant blue flowers summer-fall. Leaves turn scarlet red in fall, deepening to deep maroon. Spreads if happy. Dies back in deepest winter, but returns in spring. Good planted where you have spring bulbs, as the bulbs die back, this plant is just coming into leaf, so it hides the scraggly bulbs. | Plants | ![]() (herbloverCA) |

Coreopsis grandiflora 1-4" from DVC plant sale. Sun, tolerates and thrives in poor soils, clay, etc. Single to double golden yellow flowers on wiry stems to 2.5' tall above plant base which has lance shaped leaves, base is to 15" tall 20" wide. Deadhead to keep blossoms coming; do not let crown sit in water. Drought tolerant once established, deer resistant, tolerates pollution, thrives in poor soils. Low to average water. Showy flowers, will self-sow, blooms in warm weather through fall, even in a winter warm spell. Attracts butterflies, bees, ladybugs. | 'Sunburst' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Coriandrum Species Coriandrum sativum Coriander. 4" from OSH SR mid-March 2011. Culinary herb for leaves and dried seed heads, known as coriander seeds. Annual, will self sow if allowed to go to seed in fall. To 24" tall, plant 12" apart. Attracts bees, butterflies and birds. Deadhead to keep leaves coming. Winter/early spring best season as it bolts to seed in hot weather, so plant in shade or under heavy shade cloth in summer garden. Plant every 3 weeks to keep crop coming if you like cilantro for cooking, salsas, etc. Likes cool roots, so mulch to keep soil cool and moist or plant below tall growing plants. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Cosmos Cosmos bipinnatus 6-pack from Home Depot, San Ramon. By some miracle they had the tall variety rather than Sonata, the one I usually find which is quite short (2-3' at most) and not as prolific a bloomer. Mix of magenta, pink, and a bi-color pink with magenta ring around the yellow stamens and clear pink petals. Summer annual, full sun, can go to 5' and quite busy so plant far apart; feathery green leaves, a handsome plant. Some say it prefers poor soil and has fewer flowers in rich soil - no problem in my clay heavy soil! | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Cucumber Cucumis sativus One 2" round biodegradable pot from Home Depot San Ramon with 2 plants; vining; full sun (except in hot afternoons with triple digits, when I place a shade cloth over them). 18-24" tall (what?), space 9-12" apart; 55 days. This is an ancient cultivar dating back to T. W. Woods in 1880. Known by many names it is a black spined pickling cultivar which will grow a 6 x 2.5 inch fruit. Companion Plants for Cucumbers: Growing these companion plants around cucumbers will be helpful: nasturtiums, radishes, marigolds, sunflowers, peas, beets, carrots, and dill. Some plants actually are bad to the health of cucumber plants. Avoid these plants around cucumbers: tomatoes, sage, and other aromatic herbs. | 'Boston Pickle' | Plants | ![]() (herbloverCA) |
| Cucumber Cucumis sativus 50 days. Cucumis sativus. Plant 6-9" apart, vines go 18-24" in full sun. Succession plant, produces spring through summer. Do not overwater. Early producing plant produces high yields of 5" to 7" long sweet and crunchy cucumbers. This thin-skinned variety has excellent flavor and is never bitter. Vines bear extremely early and are very productive. Adaptable to a variety of climates. Excellent fresh or pickled. A favorite variety from the Middle East region. | 'Persian' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Zucchini Cucurbita pepo 4" pot, 2 plants, from Navlets, Danville. 51-60 days, full sun, average water needs, do not overwater. Bush habit; height 18-24", spacing 3-4 feet. Light green striped fruit, 4-6" - summer squash. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. French origin because couldn't find Italian pale grey, ribbed types. Supposed to have good, nutty flavor. Pick at 5-9" for nutty flavor; some gardeners report 'dirt' like flavor, maybe let them get too big? Other gardeners loved big ones for stuffing. Go figure. Must be individual to each strain - these were billed as 'heirloom' thus justifying $3 for a 4" pot with 2 seedlings! | 'Cocozelle' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Zucchini Cucurbita pepo 4" pot, 2 plants, from Navlets, Danville. 41-50 days, full sun, average water needs, do not overwater. Bush habit; height 18-24", spacing 4-6 feet. Light green fruit, 4-6" - summer squash. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. French origin because couldn't find Italian pale grey, ribbed types. Supposed to have good, nutty flavor. 1 plant donated to Peace Lutheran for planting this and several other plants in their veggie garden in exchange for some of their wood chip mulch. | 'Magda' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Amur Pink Dianthus amurensis Perennial, Sun. 12" tall, 15" apart. Evergreen foliage, lavender flowers, blooms spring through mid summer; in our area can bloom sporadically in winter with some warm days. 4" pot from DVC plant sale. Average water till established; most dianthus are somewhat drought tolerant in our area, but I plant with polymers around root ball for 100 degree days in summer. | 'Siberian Blues' | Plants | ![]() (herbloverCA) |
| Dianthus Dianthus chinensis Two 4" pots from old Danville garden, quite rootbound, so separate out before planting. Full sun, perennial in my zone; space at least 12" apart, if happy in location will leaf out even more. Scented flowers in mix of colors. Drought tolerant once established; I use polymers around rootball to make sure plant doesn't dry out during triple digit summer temps. Since I grow organically (except for using Osmacote time release fertilizer) I use these flowers not only to garnish food dishes but also in salads along with nasturtiums, miniature rose petals (cut up and scattered) and flowers from edible herbs such as basil, oregano, mint, etc.). Pinch back if they get leggy to keep growth compact. Single plants are small, so plant in clumps for best show. Good in containers and will bloom almost all year. | 'Telstar Picotee' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Eruca Species Eruca vesicaria subsp. sativa Mid-March 6 pack from OSH SR; Annual salad plant; 12-18" tall, 6-9" wide; leaves used in salads, all organic; bolts to seed if too hot; partial shade in summer, esp. afternoon sun; self sows freely; pinch back flowering tops to keep leaves coming. At end of season allow to go to seed and it will self sow all over garden. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Bronze Fennel Foeniculum vulgare Mid-March 2011, 4" pot from OSH SR. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not overwater. Perennial, once planted you'll never get it out - loves this area. To 4' tall, give 18" for side growth. Thrives in spring/summer but almost always some leaf available; kids call it "the root beer plant" because of its look and aroma. Used in cooking, so all organic. Full sun | 'Smokey' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Galium Species Galium odoratum 1-4" pot from DVC plant sale. Herbaceous perennial, grows well in shade, needs moisture to establish and in very hot summer weather, otherwise normal water. 6-12" tall and as wide, will spread if happy. Good underplanting for tall plants in a container or in the ground. Tea made from the leaf is a liver tonic, relieves stomach pain and a gentle sedative for children and the elderly. Bruised fresh leaves are an anticoagulant for wounds. Active ingredient, coumarin (which is why it works as an anticoagulant). | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Gypsophila Species Gypsophila paniculata 1 gal. from DVC plant sale; now 2 leggy stalks laden with a 1' balloon of of tiny white flowers at the end, almost ready to pop. Once they bloom, I will cut back the leggy stems and allow plant to develop multi-stems. Perennial, part shade, keep moist;add lime to clay soils. To 3' tall and 4' wide if happy - we'll see what happens here, whether it makes it thru the summer to next year or not! | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Helianthus Helianthus annuus Volunteer seedling in front patio windowbox! Planted in middle of cucumber patch, to provide shade for cukes. Annual, to 6' with 2' spread. Widely branching stout annual with coarsely hairy leaves and stems. Yellow terminal flower heads showy, 5" or more across. Not deep rooted (only to 6") so needs moisture to establish. If plant wilts in hot sun, always wait until sundown to water as water on leaves in sun can damage plant. Not fussy about soil, grows in heavy sand, dry disturbed clay. Water use medium, soil moisture dry. Edible seedhead; attracts wildlife (provides cover) esp. if planted with other annuals beneath it. Many wild birds covet the seeds. Use Medicinal: Flower heads with bracts removed boiled to make remedy for pulmonary troubles. Poultice of flowers used for burns. (Kindscher) Crushed root applied as a mash to draw blister. (Weiner) Roots chewed and applied to swollen area of rattlesnake bites after venom was sucked out. (Steiner) American Indians used flower tea for lung ailments, malaria. Leaf tea taken for high fevers; astringent poultice on snake bites and spider bites. Seeds and leaves said to be diuretic, expectorant. |
| Helichrysum Species Helichrysum italicum 2-1 gal. from DVC plant sale. To 18" high and 24" wide; drought tolerant herb when established; full sun. Lovely curry scent to silvery white foliage. Small button type yellow flowers. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
|
| Jasminum Species Jasminum polyanthum 1 gal. mid-March 2011 from OSH SR. Perennial vine to 15' tall, 6' wide. Needs staking, trellis, etc. Blooms March to May, sporadic bloom rest of year. Big challenge is to keep up with undergrowth of dry, brittle vines as new vines simply grow over top. In another home garden I allowed (regrets, many) it to grow over top of a pergola without pruning out old growth. Result, a behemoth covering 1/2 of large pergola, 25' long and 10' wide. From inside pergola all you could see was the old woody leafless vines (depressing). BUT we find the scent heavenly - something we cherish every spring. Seems to do well in amended clay, no special needs of any kind, except the pruning above. Average water, mine never needed fertilizing, but will use Osmacote in new garden if it looks spindly. A few blossoms will scent an entire room - delicate, jasmine odor. Have used the blossoms by adding them to green tea and enclosing in glass covered container, kept in dark. Heavenly aroma, delish tea. | Plants | ![]() (herbloverCA) |

| Lactuca Lactuca sativa 3 from 6 pack at 4/2/11 DVC plant sale; vegetable to 18" space 12" apart; prefers morning sun, afternoon shade; spring to fall. Known as a cut and come again lettuce, rather than a head lettuce which is harvested once. Leaves are pulled off during growing season as needed and plant keeps growing. Bolts to seed if too hot. Cover lettuces, cukes with heavy green shade cloth in hot afternoon shade or all day if temp. is very hot. If it bolts, cut off stem & hope for the best. Beautiful burgundy streaked leaves. Plant lettuce near beets, carrots, cabbages, strawberries, cucumbers and radishes. It also likes taller vegetables, which give it shade from the full sun during the heat of summer. You can plant it in between rows of beans, peas, and tomatoes for shade. No known incompatibilities, so plant anywhere in the garden, esp. where it will be shaded by taller plants. | 'Red Sails' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
| Lactuca Lactuca sativa 6 pack Mid-March OSH SR, snails got 2, but they may come back. Annual salad lettuce grows spring through fall if shaded from hot summer sun with thick shade cloth. 12" tall and 9" wide. Red tipped leaves, darker green at bottom. A 'cut and come again' lettuce versus a head lettuce, harvested only once. Simply tear off leaves as needed and plant will continue to produce. If it bolts, snip off stalk. | 'Red Salad Bowl' | Plants | ![]() (herbloverCA) |
Lactuca sativa One 6-pack from Navlet's Danville; very healthy plants, mostly oak-leaf type with some green, cut-and-come-again types. Prefer these because they bolt slower and you can just pull off leaves and it keeps growing. Needs protection from hot afternoon sun; I usually plant underneath trellis with beans or cukes and place a shade cloth which drapes the trellis and lettuces below in afternoon; I remove the shade cloth in am, or if we are experiencing raging hot weather, leave the green weave fabric on all day. If it bolts, snip off stalk. | 'Wildfire' | Plants | (PlantFiles) |

| Melissa Species Melissa officinalis 3" pot from Sandi; Sun to part shade (fewer flowers in shade, but that's OK, it's the leaves that are so useful). 18" tall, 15" apart. Herbaceous perennial, dies down in cold weather. Mint family, so invasive if it has conditions it likes. Once established, drought tolerant. Used for tea or whenever you want a lemon flavor in drinks (lemonade); I take the fresh branches and wrap them around a fresh fish, then poach in wine or BBQ it wrapped in foil, with some lemon slices in the body of the fish - Yum! Do not discard trimmings in compost, as it is a mint family plant and has 9 lives! I save trimmings like these, dry them and use them for kindling in wood fires or a fire pit along with lavender and other aromatics - lovely aromatic way to start a fire. | Plants | (PlantFiles) |
