Ribes curvatum

This plant sets fruit, but it is small, green and hidden below the foliage. I have never gotten ripe fruit as birds and small animals apparently eat it as soon as it is ripe. I cannot comment on fruit flavor or seed propagation. I grow this for the foliage texture and the rust brown stems in winter. It is very adaptble to soil type and moisture levels. It is very easy to propagatge and will readily tip root to from colonies. Another name for it is Outcrop Gooseberry as it has adapted to granite outcrops across the south. Flowers are small white and strap-like, showy but only in a delicate way, not a show stopper for most folks. Fall foliage is shades of red, yellow and orange. This plant has multiple thorns at every leaf node that are very sharp and needle like but not stiff. It can be handled with gloves . I am curious how it may cross with other gooseberries to introduce heat resistance to other ribes for better adaptability to southern gardens. This plant seems to be largely disease and pest free where I have grown it, but I do not have any information regarding its possible role in white pine blister rust.
