Piper Nigrum (Black Peppercorn Vine)
Have potted vine which I brought with me from South Florida, where it grew draped out of pots and right in the ground as an attractive cover.
It did well in both full sun and shade as long as mulch was applied. Does NOT appreciate over-watering, will rot at the root with even one soggy, extended soak. Drainage is a must. Best propagation method is by layering.

Here in zone 7b it overwinters indoors with no fuss (more mulch, little water, a mist now and then) and tolerates near-zero Fahrenheit temperatures with well-planned micro-climate location. We hit single digits again this winter with numerous hard freezes.
I planted vines next to my Western-facing porch, next to the brick facade basement which drains away from the house and mulched densely with bark/autumn leaves, completely blanketing over as a thick mat. Actually expected it to rot, but...

This week (March 2010) I uncovered the vine to see that it was robust, a vibrant dark green and ready for spring.

I will have rooted cuttings from time to time but do not often check this profile. Can email at sanderson_gill@yahoo.com if a contact request here goes unanswered - I don't get prompt notifications from this site about messages.
