Our other Barred Rock hatched 3 babies yesterday and has 2 more eggs that so far haven't done anything. And, one of our Silkies hatched 1 baby yesterday and has 2 eggs that so far haven't done anything. We have another Silke on 3 eggs due to hatch this weekend and another Silkie went broody yesterday and is sitting on 2 eggs. This hatching may never end.
This picture is of one of Kj's babies. I had to help it a little. I went to check on her and discovered she was off the nest and this baby had evidentally been trying to hatch and the egg got somewhat squashed. Not sure if she or another hen did the squashing.. Another egg had a pip hole in it. This baby was breathing and peeping a little. The membrane was dried and stuck to it, the shell was all broken up. I took the egg and baby and picked off some broken shell then sprayed very warm water on the suck membrane till it came loose. The baby was too cool and I was worried it might die because it was cold. The bottom part and back part of the shell was still on it though broken up and it still has the umbilculous attached so I put the baby under the mom after my son put her back on the nest and hoped for the best. Later we checked and it was completely out of the shell. What a relief.
More babies are hatching!
Ooooo...more babies. :-) KJ looks very content being a new mama.
Nice save on the little chick. One of ours wasn't as lucky. I checked to see how many had hatched and the hen had her foot on top of one chick that was already hatched. I got her off of it but it died later. we ended up w/ 11 but two days later another one passed. So she is taking care of 10 little fluffy butts. The whole hatching process for her was about 3 days. We waited a couple more days to see if any more would hatch but they didn't.
We moved her to the Chicken Hilton Hotel but haven't let her out into the lobby and park area w/ the other BO and her chicks yet. I figured I'd let the chicks get abit bigger. The other hen hatched hers out about 2 1/2 weeks before and her chicks look like giants compared to these. They grow so fast.
Good save! I had to save some crushed eggs from a first time broody hen, it's a little stressful.. but they were okay.
You sure have a lot goin on.. How fun is that!!!??? A Broody in every nest.. LOL Great pic!
We just about have a broody a week. I've never seen so many broodies. Kj hatched eggs for us last year and then tried going broody again last year but my husband stopped her, it was too close to us leaving on vacation when they would hatch. This is her first hatch this year. The other broodies have mostly been Silkies. They are little hatching machines.
I candled her other two eggs and one was bad so we threw it out. I'll try to get a picture of her with her other little ones. She is very protective.
Oh, I can't wait for the pic. It's so hard to get one w/ the chicks running about and a ruffled hen glaring at ya! Hope the other egg hatches soon.
I bought silkies last year-6 st. run but they were all boys. Thankfully the Buff Orps like to go broody as well. out of 4 hens so far 2 have gone broody. I'm hoping that the other two decide to go broody soon as well. A co-worker of DH's came over this weekend and wants to buy any pullet chicks that we have. However, I wanted to expand the layers because we just can't keep up on egg orders! My DH brings them to work to sell and he's had to tell people no advance orders. If you see him carrying in eggs better grab him!
We have BO's too but so far none have gone broody. Only ones that have gone broody are our Cochins, Barred Rocks and Silkies. The Silkies just keep going broody over and over.
I can see why that lil chicky is your son's fav. I just love that stripe!
Fingers crossed on Charcoal's egg.
Charcoals other egg hatched last night. What a relief, I was a bit worried after the one egg died in the shell pipping.
Doing the Chicken Dance!!! Yippeee!
Bad news, the little black chick died last night. It was doing fine all these days and then yesterday it was standing around with its eyes closed. Not sure what happened. Poor little thing. Now Poozie only has 2 babies. They both seem fine and energetic.
So sorry smedgekles. :-(
I'm thinking it may have been damaged since the egg got smushed somewhat while hatching. It was the first to hatch on Sunday and I noticed yesterday when it was acting funny that it was smaller than the other two. I didn't watch it to see if it was eating and drinking well, it was acting pretty normal and we didn't notice anything up until yesterday. I feel bad for the poor thing.
Aww.. I'm sorry for the lil baby.. it's so hard to loose chicks. I've missed this thread being busy with the others and hatching my own.
I missed having a broody hen too! I hope she sticks.. I have eggs due to hatch when I'm going on vacation. She is on a fake egg and a non fertile egg.. LOL
I love your lil Silkie Smedge.. she is darling!
Thanks ZZ.
You know if you had a Silkie it could probably hatch that non fertile egg and the fake one too, LOL, they are such determined setters. I've never seen anything like it. They would at least hard boil the unfertile egg. :)
We have another Silkie that just hatched out 2 eggs. I'll try to get some pictures soon and post them.
