I finally built my self watering containers

Galien, MI

I finally got mine together. I had to come up with something that involved less work than most that I had seen. These are 1/2 barrels that I got for free, a drainage hole 4 inches up, and a length of drainage hose. I meant to put a spiral of drainage hose, with an open section in the middle and on one end, but was running short of the hose. I just cut each 10 ft length into 2 five foot lengths, coiled it so the open ends would be fairly opposite of each other. The ends are covered with nylon fabric (I couldn't get a hold of any used panty hoses!) with a twisty tie. Two small plastic pop bottles plug into the drainage pipe. One another one, I used cut pvc pipe. I'm still experimenting with different soilless mixtures.

here they are filled with a batch of seedlings (dogwood, Japanese maple, redbud, etc.)

So far so good!

I've had to water the tops a bit until the transplanted seedlings could grow down a bit more, but for the most part, it's been plant and ignore. That's what I was looking for.
