Help please- white splotches on squash leaves

Milledgeville, GA

Hi all!

My adventure into strawbale gardening has been so much fun! Everything has been looking so healthy until the last couple of weeks.... my squash plants have white splotches on the leaves, then the leaf wilts away & dies. The plant is bearing squash but something is not right. Anyone know what this is & how to fix it?

I had the same problem when the weather here was cool and wet. It is some form of mildew. I use Safer mildew spray which can be used up to the day before harvesting. You have to jump on mildew quickly or it spreads rapidly and will kill your plants. If you spray on the first signs of mildew you will be ok. Do not compost the leaves and stems. I put them in plastic bags and in the garbage.

Good luck,

Thanks so much Helen! We have been having an unusual amount of rain. Where did you purchase the spray?

Thanks again!

I bought it at Lowe's but I see Safer products in many garden supply stores. I have been using Safer for years because it does the least amount of damage to the environment unless you want to go totally organic. There might be a recipe in the organic forum for something to mix yourself.
