Varieties of sumac-growing in Texas

North, TX

I have many sumac trees growing around here and I thought they were pretty much going to be all the same. Then they began to bloom and now I am looking at the plants a little closer. There are notable differences in a couple of varieties I have found but, looking at files is getting me a bit confused (although it seems that I stay confused to some degree).

Here is this variety that has lavender to purple colored leaf stems and the berry clusters are tight and growing out in a maroon color.

These are growing near the pond and look nice, giving a bit of a tropical look.

I would guess this one to be Lance leaved sumac/Prairie sumac, Rhus lanceolata.

Then there is this one that has a different leaf that I would guess to be called the winged sumac, flameleaf sumac, Rhus copallina.

It has larger, looser flower clusters and the leaf stems have a green leaf growth along the leaves. The bloom clusters are growing out white-greenish colored.

Here's another look at the one I think might be Rhus copallina.

My problem is that when I look on line and in our plant files, I get a little confused as to which is which. The photos don't seem consistent with which is which.

I'm hoping some of you out there with sumac trees have already verified the varieties and can help me out.

In Look forward to hearing from you all.
