Hi all, I could use some advice. I bought a couple of snap pea seedlings and planted them two weeks ago. They're about 3" tall.
As you can see in this picture there are tiny pea pods growing. The label on the plants said they grow to be 72". So what does this little pea pod mean? Is this normal? Will the plant stay very small? Should I pick the tiny pea pod?
Any other advice is appreciated!
Advise needed on snap pea seedlings
Yes, pick the pea pod, but don't eat it. It's already too old. But if you let the pods remain on the plant to mature, the vine won't want to grow any more.
I think eating the one behind it might be OK.
Thank you! That's great advice. So to keep it growing I have to pick these little pods. Thanks!
Well, to keep a pea vine producing you have to keep it picked.
But it's not really a good sign that it's producing at all at that size. It looks kind of stunted and the seedlings may have been too old in the pot when you planted them. They may never grow. Only time will tell.
Your really trying to grow a plant that likes a cool season to realy strut it's stuff. If you wish continue to nurture it and see what happens. In gadening as in other things we learn the most from our failures.

Grow a Row For Those in Need
LTilton and nixa 31, yeah, I think the seedlings were kind of old, too, to be planted which is part of why I picked them up. I felt a little sorry for them...:) In the future I'll know to start a lot earlier. In my climate I think we have more than one season for a plant like this. None of them are cool but the plants are in a spot in my yard that's as cool as it's gonna get.
What makes the pea pod "too old" to eat?
The shape suggests it, it looks like a couple of mature peas in there.
Edible-podded peas have to be eaten when they are very young. The pod develops into a tough shell to protect the pea berries as they mature.
You can also picke 'em, let 'em dry, shell 'em, and plant 'em when it cools down a bit. My peas are going insane this year. I have a gaziliion and a half flowers out there. On the other hand, I can't get a bean to row to save my life. Life in the Garden can be SO exciting!!!
