Goth, how recently have your Kaempferias broken dormancy? I'm still waiting on my Alva, I'm beginning to wonder if she is still there. I am so tempted to dig! I have this bare patch in my shade bed where it's supposed to come up and I want it filled LOL!

Gainesville, FL

Mine have been up since early May.

Nadine, are you sure the Ginger at the top of this page is Zedoaria? I have another Ginger tagged Curcuma longa aand they do not look the same. The Ginger at the top looks more like Curcuma inodora.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Yes it is. I donot have curcuma inodora. My tag says C. zedoaria according to Mercer Arb.Bot. Garden sale that I went to few years ago...If ya look at the leaves at the first pic..it has the red stripe starting in the middle of the leaf..All I know is what the tags had written on it from Mercer...
C. longa has plain green leaves..but the flowers are beautifully white!..

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

When I google Curcuma Zedoaria, most of the hits say Curcuma Zedoaria longa.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

mmmm..none of mine says that...just C. zedoaria....when I Googled...

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

OK , I may of missed spelled the Zedoarea. I think you are right. Thanks.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm going to jump in here and ask a question........Has anyone here started a ginger plant from the ediable ones you get from the grocery store? Would love to grow some for cooking.
Thanks so much

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, jump down 6 threads to supermarket ginger.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Picture # 2 you ID with just a picture of the flower. Now that the plant is up, do you want to rethink this one? Maggi got a Grande from the SFA sale this Spring and I have planted it next to the plant in the second picture. Picture below is of your Ginger.

I found a stick tag that says Kaempferia gilbertii but pictures I have found looks different from anything we have.

Gainesville, FL

Gilbertii is a teeny tiny little thing that never gets any size. Neither of those are Gilbertii

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Goth, that is what I am seeing but what is the one in the first picture?

Gainesville, FL

There are a lot of differently patterened Peacock Gingers. I don;t know which one that is, they are all mostly similar. It could be a rotunda or a hybrid.

The second does look like Kampheria grande, the giant peacock. Mine get leaves that can be about 18-24".

There are 2 main forms of gilbertii that are commonly sold. The most common is all green with an albomarginated edge. The second is considered variegated and has 3 colors, green, white and some pink.

No matter which gilbertii it is, these are miniature with leaves no larger than about 2".

Hay Nadine, and others, hear is a link to the Kaempferia that I think looks most like the one at the top of this page, second picture, what do you think? Nadine have you ever had this one?

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

yep.remember ya asked me what that one by my fence gate??..I couldnt remember the name right away..that has to be it..

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I want you to know I have looked through hundreds of pictures for this one. I like the purplish undersides of the leaves of this one and it does get taller than most Kaempferia.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Kaempferia rotunda 'Raven' is what the name of this one..it was named like a bird and I found the name to it..
