Has anyone grown leaf lettuce or mesclun in a grow box or earth box? I'm trying these for the first time and not sure how to plant the seeds, since it's normally seeded very close or broadcast.
Growing leaf lettuce in a grow box
Hi jkm1307 --- No problem! I've grown mine in EBs and you plant them on both sides of the EB with the fertilizer in the middle. You can refer to www.earthbox.com for an illustration if you wish or plant five on each side for a total of ten. They do prefer partial shade if your temps get real hot which is over 85*. I love the Bibb lettuce or commonly called Boston lettuce at supermarkets.
I had two lettuce seedlings (oakleaf and romaine) left over after setting them out in my garden in April, so I put them in a HEB which was just sitting around waiting for some late May peppers. Well those two plants outproduced the half-dozen in the ground, (using cut and come again techniques), and when I put out my peppers I didn't have the heart to take out the lettuce, so it is still there (and we are still eating it!).
