food to attract wild turkeys

Lexington, MA(Zone 5b)

We very occasionally have wild turkeys in the back yard. What food or seeds can I put out to have them visit more regularly?

Most anything will work. Cracked corn, deer corn, or chicken scratch will keep them coming back for more. Chicken scratch will also attract some smaller birds.

What is chicken scratch? Sorry to be so ignorant!

It's just chicken feed. Go to a farm store and buy it a whole lot cheaper than bird food. I pay about $8 for 40# at Atwood's Farm Store. Content may vary some from place to place. Mostly cracked corn, milo, barley. Usually not much millet, so smaller birds aren't fond of it.

Ours come without an attraction--then take dust baths which tear up the plants. I wish I could seen them to you.

Turkeys are a real conservation success story. When I hear carping like yours, I know we are approaching the same success we have had with Canada Geese. Sometimes we can give too much love. :)

I don't mind them eating things (crickets?) its just the plant bothering dust baths which are annoying. One of the mail trucks in Rockport has a problem with an agressive tom who fights its reflection on the truck. The migrating geese are not the problem either, it is the ones which stay around all year.

Canadian geese are a huge problem here on Cape Cod. Wouldn't mind haven't wild turkeys closer though :-) I see them on the side of the road about 1/4 mile from my house but they don't venture close to the houses.
