Plumerias in Colorado

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

My daughter live just outside of the Denver area and is wanting to know if it is possible to grow Plumerias in CO? Either as an outdoor or as an indoor plant?
Any suggestions will be appreciated. She also wants to grow gardenias.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I know that plumeria can be grown indoors and moved outdoors in summer, but not as a permanent outdoor plant in that zone... I know that others will give their better expertise... I think that gardenias will be a lot easier... I honestly don't know their temperature threshold off the top of my head...

Brittany is correct, you could grow plumeria either in pots or in the ground in Denver, but you would have to keep them stored for the winter in an area that is kept above freezing, the warmer the better. You would have to wait until the last frost date to take them outside and best to bring them inside when the nights drop into the 40's for an extended period of time. With this said I don't know how long of a growing season you would get. You would have to look at your last frost date and then when it falls into the 40's in the fall and what the difference is. If it is a very short period between the two, they may not flower for you every year. If she does want to still give it a try, I would go with dwarf or compact types in pots, they grow slow, and more bush like. They are easy to maintain, and move around. If you do go with dwarf or compact types I would buy a grafted or already rooted plant. My two cents...

I agree with Davie; also, you may need to supply extra light; they really only bloom reliably when they get plenty of sun (real or artificial).
Having said that, people grow them in Chicago, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and even Alaska and Finland, so it can be done with some dedication.
