transplanted lilac bushes

Locust Grove, GA

I transplanted 3 lilac bushes that my daughter bought a few years ago from a mail order catalog last year but something's wrong. I transplanted them last fall and the biggest one is about 3 feet tall while the other 2 are only 1 ft. The leaves are curling in and on one some of the leaves are turning yellow from the outside in. I thought maybe I had planted it too deep, I also added more soil to the hole because the roots seemed loose. We've had a lot of rain this year and I thought maybe they got too wet. I have a butterfly bush next to them and they are doing great. I dug a big hole and used soil conditioner mixed with topsoil and dirt from the hole. I know they are hard to grow here in the south, I had one at my other house and it did ok. I'm from Michigan and I used to have a lilac bush and I could bring in cuttings and the whole house smelled so wonderful! This has been going on the last month or 2 and I'm afraid if I don't so something I'll lose them. Help!

It might help if you could post some pictures--it would be great to see some of the leaves with symptoms, as well as a shot of the base of the plant if possible to show how deep it's planted. The trouble with them in the south is more about them needing winter chill to bloom--I think the plants themselves can do OK it's just they may not bloom well. Plus it can't have been that hot for that long since they've been transplanted, so I doubt that's the issue. All the rain you've had recently could definitely play a role--I've seen a number of posts recently from people in your general area of the country who are having problems with some of their plants because of all the rain--if that's the case then hopefully they'll perk back up once things dry out a bit.

we are having lilacs with the curling leaf syndrom out here too. Actually, they were curling last fall but this spring bloomed just fine. ?
