Photos ID Question

Walterville, OR

Hi All,

I joined (non paying) a few years ago and had not been around for a while until this week. I just subscribed the other day and have read many posts but still feel a little lost so forgive all the questions.

I have 8 to 10 plants that need IDing. I think many are ferns. I was going to post in the Plant and Tree Identification forum with all plants in one photo/post with the plants numbered. Then whoever could ID a plant could just reference the number. However, in reading one of the posts, it appears DG prefers one plant photo per post for ID purposes. Is that true? Also, I notice many people asking for fern IDs in the Ferns, Fungi and Mosses forum. Should I post my fern photos in there instead of the Plant ID forum?

Thanks!

I guess I must have posted in the wrong thread. I will repost elsewhere. Thanks anyway.

Hi Nadine, I think people might be able to help you here. Folks just get busy and don't always check the site for new threads. I'm sure more people will jump in given more time. If they are Northwest natives, people here could have a better idea of what they are than someone from out of the region. Why don't you go ahead and post some pictures of the things you need identified. You could do however many you want at a time (we have no rules regarding this that I am aware of), but to lessen confusion maybe half at a time might work better.

Thanks maury, I will do that sometime this weekend.

Nadine, hello. I read your post also but had no answer. You are definitely welcome to ask anything on our forums. The weather thread on PNW has most of the Oregon people on it. Go over and tell them to come and read your thread. ^_^

Hi Nadine!
At this time of year, people are generally slower to respond due to nice weather & summer schedules.
I've been outside trying to keep up with the growth explosion that happened last week as a result of the very wonderful hot weather we had. Today - it's weedeating for 5-6 hours...sounds like fun, right? LOL- I do get a fabulous sense of satisfaction from taking them down... =:0)

Post your pix here. Generally speaking, if it's a native here, one of us will recognize it. However, forums dedicated to a particular type of plant are frequented by enthusiasts who know their plant groups quite well. I recommend both - when an ID is given, we all learn.
Besides, we like photos here on the PNW. They inspire us to go out & purchase new things, so the Nurseries appreciate it too!
OOOh - good idea Willow!

Nadine, I forgot to say that if a person does not check the "new" posts, they won't see a new thread. At the end of each thread is a place to select "watch" a thread. If this is chosen, the thread will display each time there is a new post.
And as Willow said - please post whatever you like here. We are very casual here & love to know what's happening in your world, plants or no. Just be prepared for diversionary trips from original topics - we do stray easily. That being said, no one will get upset if you redirect the thread back to its original purpose.

You folks are terrific! Thanks so much!

hey, where are the photos? I love a good game of plant ID. Ususally either Kayte or Susybell beats me to it, though.

Hi Pix, yep, sure, enough I saw that thread before this one. ;) But, I couldn't ID all of her plants-I missed about half of them. Here's the thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/999530/

Nadine, Sorry I didn't see this sooner. But I think mauryhill and Katye pretty much summed up anything I might've wanted to say better than I would've anyhow. In my case, I don't always take the time to look for new threads. Between gardening, getting sucked into a book, and spending time with DH NOT gardening I haven't been here much recently. Less time in front of the PC means fewer weeds in the garden ;)

Wow. I totally understand! Problem is... I work in front of a PC! :) My daily struggle... work or weeds... work or weeds. I don't want to do either! :)

Okay Well I' finally here Checking the link

Lol, Nadine, tackle the weeds and work enough to get the paychecks. ;)
Believe me, it'll pay off eventually. (Ipod with LOOONG playlists is an invaluable weeding aid!) My house was new 10 years ago. Apparently it's on land that used to be a sheep pasture in years past. I had everything.... huge thistles, bedstraw (boy, did I have bedstraw!!) , blackberry, purple vetch, bindweed, dock, deadnettle, etc, etc. The first couple of years I worked like a demon trying to get the weeds under control. I'll never be free of them, but now it's manageable. I feel the best years are when I weed hard early in the season. It's not hot and I think it's easier to catch stuff before everything has sprouted.

susybell,
For us, it's a matter of keeping it down to a dull roar. We have 5 plots to manage and 4 acres (though much of it is trees). We were the typical, -- oooh... isn't it beautiful? We'll take it! -- without thinking of the work involved. It is our first house (we're not spring chickens either!) and clueless but we're learning. I agree with getting it done earlier in the season. One of my main reasons is so I'm not running away (screaming) from the hornets/yellowjackets. They are mean and plentiful and I can't seem to get the queens early on no matter what I put in the traps but I think that's another post in a different forum. LOL So, early weeding key. I even weeded in the rain this year. :) I paint (on canvas) so I try to look at the garden as a painting in the rough, early stage and that it will all come together one day. And, you can always 'paint over it' if you don't like it. :)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, how neat that you paint! You actually can see your dream garden come to life on canvas before it gets there in reality if you want to!

I'd like a larger property than my city lot. I've got this weird idea that if your property is big enough it's appropriate to let some of it go "natural" (as long as the blackberries are controlled, I think). You can just say you're making a habitat garden for wildlife in the spots you don't want to deal with-either yet or ever...otherwise, just do it a step at a time-gardening is one of the best ways to learn patience, I think. When I first started I wanted everything done and "finished" (In a garden???? snort!!!) right away. It took me a year or so for it to sink in that it really, truly didn't have to be done all at once.

Hmm, sounds like you have a serious problem with hornets-and know quite a lot about them. They are aggressive-worse than wasps, I think. We always end up with wasps nests on our (second story) rafters. I tolerate them somewhat as they are good predators and the nests aren't close to anything.

>You actually can see your dream garden come to life on canvas before it gets there in reality if you want to!
I'm afraid that would take real talent! LOL

>When I first started I wanted everything done and "finished" (In a garden???? snort!!!) right away. It took me a year or so for it to sink in that it really, truly didn't have to be done all at once.

You are too funny! This place has a lot of that "natural" look and luckily, only the neighbors see when I let things slide as we're set back a bit.

I think I'm beginning to relax about that - that is - until the next 'guest' arrives. You should see me 2 days prior (which is usually about how much notice I get) trying to get things in order. I discovered fall is a great time for guests as the leaves hide weeds if they haven't grown up too far and winter (if it's snowed - I'm in heaven)! LOL

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

lol, Nadine, I don't have a lot of guests-particularly gardening ones, but I'm definitely tidying up right now for my uncle's visit-and he's not even a gardener!

Walterville, OR

I hope you have a wonderful time visiting with your uncle. Hopefully, you don't tidy like I do - obsessing over things the guest will never see or notice. Why I don't tidy those loose ends up before any guests decide to drop in is beyond me. Something about working under a deadline, I guess! LOL

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Nadine,
Well, the visit went pretty well-good thing he's not a gardener, though, LOL. I spent all my time inside cleaning up before he got here. And, yes, I pretty much do tidy up all sorts of things, but at least it means it does get done once in a while! I usually spend a lot more time outside and don't waste my energy on trying to keep the house clean-I'm constantly tracking stuff in anyhow-can't get to the bathroom without walking on the carpet, white kitchen floor, or both (One of these days I'll get new flooring, I hope)
