what is happening with a pineapple that has no "top", no leafy structure? it looks normal otherwise, although a little "squat". the one next to it is fine.

T, I don't know. Since I didn't give mine winter protection, it never fruited and after 2 yrs I got tired of it and yanked it. Hopefully the fruit doesn't get its nutrients from the leaves, which is the only reason I would think it matters.
no winter protection for mine either, nery. mine have been inground for 3 years now and froze back something terrible this winter. i was really surprised when two fruits appeared. i suspect it has something to do with the cold. that particular plant has a large pup and the mother plant is dying back. i just hope it waits until the fruit is mature.
