Thanks everyone . . .
I have been SWAMPED lately. First, DD (in Victoria) made me a grandmother June 13. But besides that, I have been made the director in charge of developing an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in sustainability. I had no idea how many meetings and paperwork was involved.
My disseration was on consumption, economics and sustainabilty. But that was 9 years ago - so I have been plowing through all kinds of books and professional journals, as well as organizing faculty for developing courses etc.
We plan that there will be a 2 course capstone project for all seniors. The first course is for multidisciplinary teams of students to design the project and the 2nd course in the spring semester is the implementation of the project.
Anyway, we have to come up with feasible concepts for projects at the senior level.
Meanwhile, I will be teaching the Introduction to Sustainability course and I am thinking of having as a course project the development of a butterfly garden on campus using primarily native plants.
And - I am hoping to sponsor a Round-up next summer. The terrace will be three years old then, and various DG members who donated plants might like to see how it all turned out.
(This year we have really lush growth of a lot of green stuff - still hopeful that the sun will return and we will get blossoms ^_^)
Congrats on being a grandma!
Wow - the grandchild gets one sentence and sustainability gets five paragraphs?!! Is the kid sustainable?
CongratulationsMichaela!
Boy, girll? Big, small?
Congrats on the wee little one!!!
Congrats, Grandma...yeah how about some baby info?
Born on my parents' 50th anniversary.
Okay - baby info
Colben Hunter Thorhaug was born June 13 and weighed 6 lbs, 14 oz. DD is a bit obsessive - or maybe it's just a different generation - anyway, she made a plaster cast of her belly and spent a great deal of time sanding it and painting it - I have no idea what she could use it for except maybe a bird bath - but what do I know?
Then, she is all worried because the baby was born 2 weeks before due date (so was she). Then, the little guy loses a bit of weight (like the all don't when they are first born). So the mid-wife tells DD to nurse the baby, then use the breast pump to get more milk, then tube feed the baby that milk. Okay, so here was her schedule the first 2 weeks. 45 minutes nursing, 45 minutes pumping, 1 hour of sleep (if you can) then start nursing again. All this, 'cause they are worried about the weight loss and maybe Colben will become dehydrated (like nobody thought of water????)
So, for the first two weeks, DD and her husband aren't getting nearly enough sleep - which of course, will affect breast milk production. . . . sigh. . . .Of course, I am 3000 miles away - and DD never listened to anything I said, so no reason she would start now hahahahah
I nursed both my kids, the first for 11 months, the 2nd for 15 months. Why? Because I am lazy! This is the easiest no-brainer approach. At 10 months I introduced a cup - weaning was a breeze, and they never used bottles. Absolute cake-walk (and they never used pacifiers either - they actually refused them!)
But, hey! What do I know???
I tell you, part of me feels sorry for my daughter taking everything so seriously, insteading of just relaxing and enjoying the baby. But part of my is LMAO!
Happy, happy birthday Grandma Michaela! I just got back from camping (saw your camping thread) near Lake George. I wouldn't go to the Lake George area cause that is out of your way and would stick to some place along the NYS thruway. Your little one is so beautiful and I bet you can't wait to hold him. Have the happiest day celebrating your birthday. Eleanor
Beautiful little guy! And what a name. Sounds like a Viking warrior. Maybe he will deliver us - hee hee!
Water is a no-no for newborns. It offers no nutrition at all and fills the baby up so he or she will drink less milk or formula.
Michaela, I did ALL THAT with my itty bitty DD#2 and she is now nearly 5'9". The nursing the tube-feeds (is she taping them to her nipples? OMG, what a hassle!). If baby is nursing well, I think he will gain OK. If baby is sleepy all the time and too weak to nurse as mine was, tube-feeds aren't really enough to jump-start his system.
After 6 weeks at with DD#2 at 4 lbs 15 oz. I finally relented and started inserting a bottle of formula every 4 hours whether she cried or not. She gobbled it up and then was a better nurser because she had more energy. Of course my XH didn't really see the point of nursing and as I had a broken leg I was dependent on him to bring her to me to nurse. So we ended up doing more formula than I would have preferred. But once I got the cast off etc. I started nursing more - I found it's not really over 'til it's over, 'cause with both my kids I nursed more and less and then more again. And pumping - some women can and some women can't, but it doesn't mean you can't nurse a baby.
CUTE!
Ummmm. Oh. The baby.

Congrats on your sweet little grandson, Michaela!! Sounds like you are a busy lady!!! All good stuff!
Congrats on both fronts, Michaela. You ARE busy.
Happy belated B'Day.
strong name for sure!!
Congrats on the happy, healthy new arrival!!
Thanks everyone! Regarding Colben's name . . . names tend to be rather temporary in my family. My father's birth name was Lester Carl Wandell - but everyone has called him Jim since he was probably 17. I don't have any of the names on my original birth certificate (really awful names) and had my name changed legally a couple of decades ago. In Canada, I am called by my first name, Beth, and in the U.S. people call me Michaela.
Now eldest DD - the mother of Colben was named Alicea (pronounced Alisha) Marie - but she has called herself "Mischa" for about 6 years. Works for me! Nobody should be burdened by names they don't like. Change 'em, I say. I like the tradition that you add a name everytime something significant happens in your life.
In any case, Colben could have a very different name at age 22 ^_^
Sounds good, Mary!
Better get used to GRANDMA!
Are you spies??
LOL!
Congratulations on the new grandbaby Michaela! He is absolutely beautiful!! :-)
