Found EA in San Diego.....

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hubby and I are spending several days in San Diego and of course I had to look for plants. Today we stopped by Target and I found a very nice full basket of DS-70 which they had labeled as "Carnosa". The clerk said they just started to get them in. I plan on hitting up more Targets before we leave. The leaves do look a bit different from DS-70, they seem to be more oblong than usual and are reddish on the edges. My camera's in the car, but I will post a picture tomorrow.

Awanda

Target in our area used to carry live plants but don't find them there anymore.

Here is the DS-70 I picked up.

That looks a little different than the ones we have in stores in this area. Lacunosa and a similar one to yours is usually what we find from EA.

Check out the thread Alison M made further down on the forum. That is the hoya I most see in stores. Yours looks different.

Great find Awanda, lovely ds-70! I have a couple of EA ds-70's but the foliage is looking a bit ratty on the oldest one, from too much sun.

edited to add: I will be curious to hear what you think of the fragrance of the blooms. The first time mine bloomed I didn't like the fragrance at all, I thought it smelled a bit musty, but I guess it's grown on me because now I like the scent.

Humm Susan you're right, it does look different. PL, I had a DS-70 before and I love the smell of the flowas:-). Hubby took me to Grigsby's nursery today and I really enjoyed the visit and all of the weird and neat looking plants they had. Of course I had to pick up a Loyceandrewsiana and a Australis ssp. Oramicola, plus 2 succulents.

Awanda, I would love to see what Loyceandrewsiana looks like! That's another I've never heard of ... what a name to try to pronounce, LOL.

Oh how I wish we had some good nurseries nearby! Back in the 70's and 80's we had so many here in town but they all eventually closed when the Wal-Mart's, Home Depot's, Lowe's and Targets started building up. Where I live (Daytona Beach) isn't that large and we have 3 HD's, 2 Lowe's, 2 Super Target's and 3 Wal-Mart Supercenters within 5-8 miles of me! I think that's overkill! There are still 2 nurseries here but they don't carry much in the way or house plants - all landscape type plants.

I also noticed that the EA plant I purchased wasn't heavy with soil like the previous ones, so they must have changed the soil they use. PL here is a picture of the Loyceandrewsiana, the one with the pancake leaves.....enjoy!!

Very cool! Love those big, flat leaves!

Is that plant next to it a Huernia? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61056/ I've had one of these for a long time ... cute little burgundy blooms. I had no idea it was related to Hoya until joining DG!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

PL, it's a variegated stapelia, but they are close relatives to Huernia:-).

Awanda, is that Stapelia one that gets the really large star shaped blooms? I've seen pictures of some Stapelia's that have awesome looking blooms, a lot larger than the flowers on my Huernia.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi PL, yes the stapelia's can get really large stinky blooms:-). I have several of them hanging under our orange trees. One has become home to a Mother bird and her young ones. I'll be happy when they leave so I can water it:-).

Awanda, that is so cool! The birds apparently don't mind the stinky blooms or maybe this isn't the time of year the Stapelia's bloom? What kind of bird is nesting there? I love watching the parents feed the babies and then the babies fledge the nest. Sooo cute seeing them out on a little branch, flapping their wings but afraid to take off! Are you able to pick the oranges without the parent birds going crazy?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

PL, I try not to get too close to the nest. The Mother bird will get out of the nest and stand on a higher limb so she can see what is going on. I just don't pick the oranges close to the nest:-).

We have Mockingbirds nesting in a crape myrtle tree right outside the front door ... the second time they have nested there. Luckily we use the garage for coming and going most of the time so don't go in and out the front door. Mockers will dive bomb you if you get near their nest. It's weird, they nest really low in the trees and shrubs, not like other birds who build their nests pretty high. I'm only 5'5" tall and last year we had a Mockingbird nest in a Hibiscus bush and I could walk right up and look into the nest without standing on my tip toes or even straining ... it was just right there! The one in the crape myrtle is about 6 1/2' above the ground. This spring we had a pair of Downy Woodpeckers excavate a cavity in a camphor tree in the corner of the backyard. I have a bench out in that corner and love to sit out there and relax. The female didn't mind me being under that tree at all but the male would flit about from branch to branch making a rukus until I walked away. We also had tons of Blue Jay's nesting in trees all along the fence in the back yard. One day I sat and counted more than 9 baby jays in the tree, it was so much fun watching mama/daddy feed them. They didn't seem to fear me being there at all .. but of course they were not within reach! For a few years I used to have house wrens nest in a hanging basket of grape ivy, in the corner of the front porch. I changed the plant and now have a Hoya rubra hanging there ... guess they don't like that plant cause they haven't been around to nest this year! My backyard neighbor had a lot of Cardinal's nesting in her trees this spring. We have lots of mourning doves around too. I keep about 5 or 6 bird feeders and two suet feeders filled every day so it attracts lots of birds. I love watching them and listening to them sing.
