I ordered a blue hummer feeder. The prettiest blue! I have clear and red ones, but wanted the blue. I will see if my luck is as good as Seedpicker with FAST rooting!
Rooting hummer feeder
That's so lovely, Sally. I don't know if the leaves will root faster but they sure will root prettier. I like the variegated violet all in bloom.
really pretty. hope it works.lol

Lovely! I don't root AV leaves in water, but i've got a collection of little rooting vases on the back of the counter... always find something to clip and stick into them!
Yes, it is so pretty! I root in "soil" all the time, takes quite a while. Seedpicker had good luck so it can't hurt to try. Maybe the blue glass is magic! :)
Hi!!
It is beautiful!!
One teensy note of caution, though :0)
...those little red inserts are going to be hard to pull the roots and babies through...You may want to remove those, and use the bigger hole. Even without the glass flowers, it can be a tight squeeze coming out those little holes ;0)
It sure looks pretty and I hope it is "magic" for you
Out of curiosity, I experimented to see if it was really faster...so, I took two leaves that were the same av, and same size. I put one in the blue glass, and the other in the soil mix with wick.
I dug the soil mix one up the other day, and it is lagging behind the leaf in blue glass

Yes Blue is magic!!! ha. Thanks, I will take the red things out and put them with the other glass flowers I took out. I have thought about how hard it will be to take them out later. We shall see. I just LOVE this feeder, the color and raised "bumps" are gorgeous.
It is gorgeous Sally!! And water rooting is much faster for a lot of plants.
Lynn
well I guess even if they don't root as fast, it will certainly be more FUN rooting in that! :0)
why not experiment, too?,...take a variegated leaf like you have there, and put in soil. Test in a few weeks to a month, or so, and see...?

Oh, I have rooted MANY in "soil." I know how long it takes! ha Three months or so.
That Hummer feeder is Gorgeous! I love the vivid blue and when it's hanging in the window I bet it makes it even prettier with the bright light shining through! Sally, do you mind me asking where you ordered that one? I have a thing with colored glass containers and that one is just so pretty! It sure makes a perfect cutting vase!
This is a wonderful site and they have a nice catalog. They sent one with the feeder. Comes with a hanger and foam cleaning brush. Of course it comes with the flowers for the hummer too.

Sally-
I've been wondering the last few days, how the hummer feeder is working for you?
I picked these up at a thrift store today...I think they'll make nice rooters. the long glass thingy sure turned a lot of heads on the way up to the counter!
The lady that checked me out at the counter, even said, "boy, that sure looks like a BONG", lol
The other thing is a toothbrush holder
Nice finds! WELL, my leaves went limp, too hot in the sunroom this summer. I brought all of my plants in. I have started over on the leaves.. I have trouble with making the bottoms stay in water though. Top heavy with the leaf on top. I have most in "soil" but I will try this again. If not, well, the hummers will have a new feeder.
hm...sorry to hear it :0(
I will say this...the ones I have in the h. feeder, have much longer stems, than the others. Maybe that is helping them balance...
maybe try again with longer stems?
I think mine are pretty long. I will have to remember to make sure. Maybe the top of my leaves is heavier or wider. Well, we shall see.
Oh gee, I just remembered. The leaves didn't completely wither. Just the stem and lower leaf. I cut the bad parts off and stuck them. They still look good on top! Crossing my fingers!
well, I hope it works for you this time...I can figure out why it worked for me, but not for you...?
my first thought was the color of the glass, then remembered you got blue, too...stumped.

:) Yes, blue is magic, just need to keep my leaves in the water, ha.
you know I think this might reduce the hole size a tiny bit, but I've heard that people use that clear aquarium line tubing(sliced lengthwise) to coat the rims of their solo cups or pots, so maybe that would help the bruising of the necks of your cuttings against the glass edge??
Or maybe just push them in all the way, so the stem isn't resting on the edge?
My new ones are pushed in and they are (so far) standing up and leaning on the center, hanger area. I will just keep watching. I sat it under my lights, nice and cool inside. The little red plastic things do not help. Just top heavy. I think each leaf is different. I just hope this works, it is pretty!
Well, the roots and babies grew and they are potted up now. They just got too hot the first time. The sunroom is usually fine, but THIS summer is a summer to FORGET with the heat and no rain....
hi Sally ;0)
I'm glad they did well and rooted for you. All mine in water are still rooting faster than the ones in soil.
