Planters or pots

Troy, MO

Back when I did grow violets, we just used the old regular planting pots. And were very very careful when watering.

I see that there are some self watering pots and even special soil for them. (not just african violet potting mix)

Are those really any better for growing the violets or are they just a way to take your money?

I do want to do what is best for growing the best plants I can.

This is a great place to learn about the different soiless mixes, fertilizers, pots etc. We all grow in a soiless mix. I use Volkmann's and add more perlite and vermiculite. LIGHT is the key. They are so easy to over water.

I use violet pots, the plastic ones in the correct sizes. I also have pots call Oyama that self water, but I often just water them the same, from the top. You can water from the bottom like wick watering. I did that for a long time, but now I do it from the top. I like to control the amount.

Fertilizer is important. We all use all kinds of good fertilizers here.

Glad to have you here!

Welcome,
As Sally said,we all use different mixes. As far as pots go,it really doesn't matter,as long as you use pots about a third as big as the plant. For tiny babies you can use little plastic Solo cups,or any very small pot.Just make sure to poke holes in the bottom. I have been trying wicking, but I still prefer to water some plants by hand.
There are wonderful people here who give great advice.^_^
