thanks Josephine, I'll ck it carefully tonight. But by quickly scanning I'd say any of the ones in the link are way prettier than the thing that's still perched on my covered patio wall, lol.

Maybe tomato hornworm moth?

It looks like one of the underwing moths to me. These moths all look very similar to each other on their rather plain topsides, but their undersides are usually bright red, hot pink, or bright yellow or orange - some of them have dull colored underwings. I've never attempted to try and ID them, because they rarely ever show their underwings, making it VERY difficult to separate them.
