these don't look like the eastern black swallowtail cats in my book.
I didn't get a close up look at the butterfly when she laid eggs, buy the time I got to the plant she flew off. I've been watching for the eggs to hatch, the fennel is in a pot so I brought it onto the porch.
Is this a swallowtail cat?
sorry about the terrible picture...
Yes, those are black swallowtail cats. Most of the pictures you see of them are of late instar cats, and yours are early instar cats. As they grow and molt, they'll change.
Congrats on your cats!

Ok...I couldn't think of any other butterfly that would use the fennel and dill, there's cat's on the dill to both in the ground and in the pots....their funny...look like little dots of Pepper.
Thanks!
yup, they have a white band in the middle. I found some on the bronze fennel too.
More the merrier!!....If you take them off and move them inside now, you won't have any problem getting them to change over to parsley if you have more of it to feed with.
I have parsley in pots, it was right next the fennel and dill...I'll bring some in and try to get them to eat that too, might have to make a run to the nursery to get some more. I've got a couple of bronze fennel seeds sprouting but they are far from being ready to use.
LOL! Looks like a mini Christmas tree with pinecones!
haha...it's fun having them on the front porch. From morning to evening there is a difference in their size. They grow so fast!!
Odd, I haven't had much Monarch or Gulf Frit. activity lately, wondering if it's because of all the rain. Even most of the plants aren't blooming like they normally do !
