Hello everyone. It has been many years since I had African Violets (actually 24-25 years).
I had amazing luck with them back when I did grow them.
I am wanting to try having violets again, and started looking on the internet for places to get them. Almost all the places that have them have the leaves. I can not remember how long it takes for them to go from just the baby leaf stage to being big enough to bloom. Can anyone help me with that?
Also if the internet place does sell more than just the leaves to start a plant with, they sell two inch size pots. Again, I do not remember how long it takes for that size to become a blooming plant.
I used to start a lot of my own violets all those years ago, but just don't remember how long it took for them to get to blooming stage.
I am not a young person and now days, time goes by so fast, I am not sure how many years I have for waiting. lol
Long time gone from Violets and have questions
Hi Makeiteasy ,
I am glad you are starting over and I would like to help by sending you some violet leaves and I think I have some small plants big enough to send to you , as far as the pots you can just go to the walmart/ kmart or even just the grocery store and buy the cheap little solo cups but I use any trays or cups that I get food in ie . yogurt cups, trays you get a salad in from Mc Donalds or any take out and in fact I have gone and asked to buy the trays from them ( the restaurants ) and for a small amount of money they will sell them :) Really anything can be used to root leaves in as long as you can make a drainage hole in it :)
Now about the time from leaf to bloom varies with conditions and and some violets just grow faster than other but averagely it takes 6 weeks from leaf to babies and maybe two months more to bloom but don't hold me to that as conditions really make a difference , how warm , how much light , fertilizer ( I do a constant feed with all my plants , a small amount of fert in each watering cause I don't only eat in the Spring and Summer so why should plants that are actively growing :) most ofmine are under lights so they grow all year .

Me again ,
Also if you want lights and you don't have room for the big 48" shoplights I found 2 foot ones at Wal-Mart , they are two light fixtures but they are only 2 foot instead of 4 foot , my shelves are only about 36" so the 4 foot ones just hang off too far on the ends so it is a waste for me to use the 4 foot , I was thrilled when I found the 2 foots at Wal- Mart :)

You can find alot of the smaller flourescent light fixtures ( 2 ft and under ) at hardward stores. They are sold as "under cabinet lighting" fixtures. Usually they come with a warm white bulb included. I bought 2 fixtures and an extra cool white bulb that would fit. Changed one of the warm bulbs for cool.
Also, I have a "starter" violet, it is still pretty small, and it has it's first open flower today, and plenty more buds. Another starter I have is just starting to get buds. So you never know, some bloom early!
Welcome! I buy big plants and small ones too. I start leaves from my favorites, but I have never bought a leaf. I love getting plants and then I can make new ones if I want. Best of both worlds.
