They sure don`t look like the silkies I see on here.Is the rooster a cochin?
Are these silkies
Here is another picture,Someone gave them to me,He has mites on his legs the guy dipped his legs in diseal fuel before I got there siad it would kill them,I don`t want my other chicken to get them.I do have them seperated from the others.I read here that vasaline will also kill them,is that true and how many times do I need to do that?Hope I didn`t make a mistake getting them, mine are so healthy and want to keep them that way.
They do put motor oil on perches to prevent some mites--and I think vaseline on their legs is okay. I think imidacloprid is used systemically--but then you can't eat the eggs for a while.
Smedgeckles, thanks for the pictures! I somehow ended up with a plethora of Cochins, and I'm glad the are so cute. I ordered Standard White and Partridge, but think I've ended up with six Banties as well. They were shipped as "assorted feather-footed Bantams", and three are buff/red, and three black and white striped (so far the stripes are indistinct). We'll see how they end up!
yes all 3 r pure silkies includeing the roo. the reason they look different is urs r pet/hatchery quality. i'm not saying that in a bad way i love all silkies and ur birds r adorable it's all in the breeding of them.
hatchery stock is bred for quanity so u see flaws like red comb, large combs, less foot feathering, brass color in hackles ect on the silkies. they breed whatever bird they want the only real guidline i see is they try to seperate colors and breeds that's mainly it.
private breeder stock and exhibition lines r bred and culled to apa/aba standards to improve many things. we pair up and trio specific breeders to produce the best quality, type and features in offspring that we can. we breed for quality, health and many things to improve each generation better than the last so we breed to kick out the bad genes where as a hatchery doesn't if that makes sence.
if they have scally leg mites yes the old remidy is kerosen(Sp) it will works but not sure how fast and i don't know how safe it is for the birds to be exposed to it. vasiline works because it is oily and smothers them, cooking spray works also but doesn't last as long. for those i use baby oil and regular mites i use adams flea and tick spray for dogs it comes in a blue bottle. it kills instantly and protects for up to 3 mths sometimes longer. when my husband does it he uses sevin dust u use on a garden/roses but i'm highly alergic to it so i have to stay clear of everyone for a week before i can mess with the birds/coops again. the bad part of that is it is a stong pesticide so u have to wear full clothing and dust masks but it works second best from our experiences. we tried DE also for mites and things but it has never worked for us although alot of people reccomend that also.
hope that helps some,
silkie
catmad you will love Cochins, they are sweet little things. We have Blue and Birchen. Both are sweet and the hens make good mothers
Thak you so much silkiechick, the silkies I see on here and web site are beautiful! especially the white ones.I thought maybe you bathed them and blow dryed them to make them look like that I love the way there heads look with all that puffy look.I got some of that DE and am going to put that down in the silkie part and in the main part with my others I don`t want them to catch anything,I will allso put something on the roost in the main part. What do you have for your silkies to go into at night?I know they don`t roost, they would feel more protected if they could go into something at night,I am goinig to keep them inside for a coupe weeks. The guy I got them from only fed them scratch,I use that as a treat.I am feeding them what I feed my hens layer pelletts and crmble, will that upset there system being changed over so quickly?
I tried using DE and my flock came down with respiratory issues.. I've never had problems before... the dust from the coop was awful... even made me choke! Never again will I use DE inside the coop.. I am all for going natural, but that was a bad experience.
I have a bottle of the Adam's Flea and Tick that Silkiechick recommended long ago.. it works great..
Im not trying to hijack the thread but how do you know when they have these kinds of issues, Or do you just use the DE & flea sprays to prevent?
Heavinscent, look at the chickens closely and see if there is any scaly legs or little tiny bugs crawling on their legs, heads, body anywhere. A magnifying glass would be helpful. Some bugs tend to be more active at night so you might want to go out with a flashlight and a magnifying glass to check the chickens.
The chickens may also show signs of weight loss, drop in laying, enlarged shanks and toes with crustyness or scaling, ruffled feathers, loss of appetite and so on depending on the type of bug.
Oh ZZsBabiez don`t say that I went to town today and bought DE and spread it in the coop both in the main coop and silkies coop.I opened all the windows and there is a nice breeze so maybe that will help and the chickens are outdoors most of the time except at night.
you r very welcome anytime. this is one of my fluffy bums but that is her natural everyday look her crest is actually that big to see in person too. this pic was taken a few weeks mabe a mth ago. she hasn't been bathed and blowdried since last fall (sept i think)when she was showed. i only bath them like 3 weeks before show most of the time they don't need it. i keep them on wire my flock is not raised in ground runs so they stay cleaner and catch less things, it actually helps greatly keeping them that way(easier to clean coops too). it's not the greatest pic since it was taken with a cell phone.
Silkie I love to look at pics of your Silkies, they are so pretty.
They are beautiful!!!
