Other planters that I use in my yard and garden ,we have several large Sweet Gum Trees in the yard and so there is a lot of trouble from roots after way too long of a time I gave up digging holes and started using these planters ..Some have bottums others just wire for the bottums and some nothing at all all depending on the intended plant ..The bed shown is primarily a Tulip bed

Your planters are really nice. I have to plant above ground also. I have not been that creative. I have used anything that will hold plants. LOL

I wish there was more energy in me and more hours in the day that were not too hot. I'd possibly make some prettier boxes than my plain Janes.

I like the cement blocks with flowers inside them. A good use of space. :-)

I wrote a reply last night but about the time I hit send a T storm knocked me offline ..It was just to say that I also use whatever I can as evidenced by the concrete blocks ..I have several wooden planters that are square 2'x2' easy to make and easy to care for

grits,
It looks like you have covered the root flare on that Sweet Gum tree. That's a sure death sentence for the tree. It may take a while, but the bark will rot allowing pest and diseases to enter the tree. You can still put planters around a tree as long as you place some distance between the trunk and the planters - more like a donut. Very few trees can handle changes in soil elevation.

Octogon planter This is made from treated deck boards 5-1/2" wide 5/4" thick which is just about the cheapest material I can find here in SE Ok. the boards are cut at 22-1/2° angle on the ends the lenght is important only as keeping each board the same lenght, obviously the longer each board the greater the circumfrence of the planter ..i think these were 8-1/2" long making it about 68'around some of the planters are fastened with screws and others were nail using an air operated nailer
