I'm lucky to have found a pair of Eastern Phoebes nesting under the eaves of my garage this spring. This morning when I was outdoor. I spotted a male finch flying toward the Phoebes' nest. One of the Phoebes promptly intercept the offender and drove him away. While the Phoebe was chasing the finch, its mate returns to the nest. What a wonderful setting of nature just unfolded right in front of my eyes!
My question is, do finches cause any harm to Phoebes' nest and their eggs or their youngs? Or will they occupy the nest that some one already built?
Do Finches hijack other Bird's Nest?
"NEST: Variable placement including appropriation of other species' nests; of twigs, grass, debris, leaves, rootlets, hair. Often reused for later broods. Female builds nest."
From the House Finch entry of "The Birder's Handbook" by Paul Ehrlich.
So yes. They will use other birds' nests. As far as harming an existing nest/occupants. I couldn't find any definiative answers.
Trinch, thank you for the helpful info.
