Anyone having problems with these critters and what did you do to rid them. I have planted cukes 3 times and each time it appears that they are germinating they disappear. I replanted under chicken wire to eliminate birds or chipmunks but to no avail. So I dug into the area and found white termite looking creatures where the cuke seed had been. Looked on UGA Coop Extension and they described the problem to a tee but gave no solution other than a soil drench? While I would like to eliminate these buggers I still want to be able to eat whatever cukes do grow. Any suggestions? I'm about to grow them in pots.
Cuke Root Maggots
Are they like onion root maggots? If so it's a tiny fly laying the eggs so the chicken wire isn't going to help. Get some row covers and during the spring keep them covered. I didn't cover my onions this year and th onion root maggots layed their eggs on them. There is nothing to be done but yank them. But I really don't know anything about the cuke root maggots...but I bet they are similiar.
Okie...I think you're right about the onion root maggots. I did have onions planted there last Spring. I would imagine that whatever kind of maggot it is that it would feed on the roots of anything. Thanks for you're advice.
