THE GIFT THAT KEEP'S ON GIVING

Ferndale, WA

My wife and I decided we would attempt to hatch three Banty eggs, on day 19 one broke out of the shell and we never even saw a pip. Just about thirty minutes later the second one piped and withing forty five minutes it hatched out. I was in utter shock. I was sure the third was a dud when two days later nothing. I told my wife the next morning I would throw it out. When we got up that morning the third one was running all over the place. I was so happy for a !00% hatch, (ok so it's only three eggs). Any way we have a little black silkie and she has been on the nest forever, with one egg. I told my wife lets go out and I will pick her up and you place the newest little one under her and steal her egg. I picked her up and my wife let out a shreik, there's a little white chick under her. Sure enough she had in fact hatched out that little egg that we were sure was a dud. We now have four little new banties to add to our little flock of six banties. What fun, and oh the experiences. Haystack

Are they Dutch? Catscan is the Dutch Bantam hatching Queen! I love the way they pop out.. so quick, if you blink you'd miss it! So fun to hatch them..

Come on Haystack.. show us those babiez!!!!

I have one serama pip and I wish it would pop out like those lil Dutch do.

Oh my dearest JeanMarie!!! I'm so glad to hear from you. I was about to call out the F B I and put out an amber alert for you. HAS ANYBODY SEEN OR HEARD FROM MY SWEET GREAT NEICE (JEANMARIE) WHEW I feel better now. Boy do I miss you. Uncle Hay

OK ZZ's or anybody here is a dumb question: I have raised a lot of babiez but I have never up until now had a hen hatch an egg. I took her baby away as I was worried. The question is....If she (the hen) hatches out her own babiez, and the nesting box is two feet off the ground, and the waterers and feeders are all set high for the mature hens, how does the baby get water and food? And how does it (the baby) get back in the nest? I took her baby away until I could be assured she would survive and I had the answer to those questions. OMG that little silkie chased my wife all over the coop when she reached in an took the baby. I was laughing so hard I could not even help out. My wife was running and screaming and that silkie was hot on her trail. Sorry but I'm LMBO while I'm typing this and reliving the scene. Answer my questions and I'll give her the baby back. LOL Hay

Congrats on the babies(isn't it exciting!)
My first hen was up in a nest as well. She still was sitting on eggs so we moved the eggs, chicks and the hen down to the floor. We built a temporarily area around her until we were sure that no more eggs were going to hatch. This worked well as she was torn about protecting the chicks that had jumped out of the nest and those that were still sitting up there waiting for her.
Now as you know they are in their fancy Hotel! lol!

The BO that is currently hatching out eggs thankfully picked a nest that is floor level so we built a temp area around her already.

Hi Melissa!!! Boy sure do miss you. We had such a good time following your hatch and all.

You were such a good sport, I truly would like to know what your girls look like and how they are all doing. I hope the experience was positive even though the hatch rate was not so great. We all would love to hear more from you. Haystack

I"ve just been busy Hay. Last Friday was the last day of school, Friday night was my son's graduation, and this week I've been at school tying up paperwork, and at home getting ready for son's party this weekend.

I have new eggs ready to go in the bator, so I'll be back to my antics again soon. Our electric issues aren't permanently fixed yet, and I've been holding off putting them in the bator for that reason, waiting on the contractor to get back out here but, they're going to have to go in soon.

I'll get an updated pic of my babies, they've grown SO much!

Great Melissa!!! We'll be right there with you on you next great adventure. Hay.
