Homemade suet

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Does anyone have a delicious homemade suet recipe? I am using one given to me by a friend. Both parents and chicks are eating it. Parents are bringing it to nestlings.
Any time I put out store bought suet, it goes uneaten.

I make suet cakes every time I fry bacon. I just wait for the grease to cool down a bit, fill an empty suet tray with black oil sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts, and/or meal worms (in other words, whatever I have at hand), and pour the grease to fill it. Once it cools a bit, I wrap it and freeze it. Only problem is that my formula is no good in warm weather. I make them year round and only put them out in the winter.

Important side note... you MUST wait for the grease to cool first. I once tried pouring into the tray when it was pipping hot, proceeded to melt the tray, and ended up with globs of bacon grease and seeds all over my counter and dripping onto my floor. A lesson you'd be better off not learning for yourself.

I never thought of using bacon grease! I use crisco or sticks of lard. And rasins, birdseed, peanuts, cornmeal, flour, etc. I use it until it is really hot and nesting is over. The mix is poured into a 9x12 pan, scored and frozen. When hard, the suet is cut in chunks like brownies, bagged, and put back into the freezer until needed.

Hi guys, Have you seen all the recipes on the Sialis site?

I use chunky peanut butter as an ingredient when I make mine.

Thanks Pelletory!
Very interesting. I have not added mealworms ever. I am sure it adds a lot of value to the mix. My suet has lots of ingredients which I whiz in a food processor. This distributes the sweet taste of sugar and rasins all around. Great variety.
