FEED Question

Conroe, TX

We have never had this problem before so I thought I's ask all of you about this.
My husband bought 2 bags of hen scratch for the chickens today and when he opened it we found it contains weebles. I know weebles get into grain products but am wondering if this will be bad for the chickens. They eat all sorts of bugs anyway but are weebles in their grain bad or an added treat?

You mean weevils? I'm having visions of those little toys that used to be popular when I was a kid - you know - "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down!" :-)

Anyway, my random thought processes aside - weevils won't hurt the chickens and the chickens will probably enjoy eating them.

Ha, yes I meant weevils but in my haste to post I weebled :)

I sort of thought that they may not be a problem but thought I'd get other opinions. Thanks!

Weevil's are very heavy carriers of E-Coli, and I would not personally feed that scratch to my girls. Also Weevil's in grain is usually a sign of old supply and often times when you see Weevil's it can be a sign of mold beginning to develope in the grain even when you can't detect it. Mold is deadly for poultry. I would take it back to the store and demand a fresh supply. IMHO. Haystack

Thanks Haystack. I thought about the "old supply" issue but did not know about the e-coli.
