Help! Chicken with broken egg, crop full.

Conroe, TX

We noticed one of our RIR's has been pooping egg and has an egg yucky butt. Flies are having a blast with the poor thing. We put her in some warm water which she seemed to love and just stood there. It seemed to be soothing to her. But, she also has a crop full of water and she keeps drinking. Her crop is big like a softball. Sometimes when she bends her head down water will come out of her mouth.
What do we do with her? Could there be something else going on other than just the broken egg? We have her seperated from the other chickens.

if she is pooing egg then she probably was eggbound and an egg broke inside unless it was a shell less one. u need to make sure there is no shell pieces still in there or it could cut her insides bad. u will have to feel around inside to see if she still has any and if so remeve them. i know that sounds weird but sometimes ya gotta help them with eggs or they will be injured from them. use like ky not vasiline so u don't hurt her.

yes baths will help her it is soothing. i'd also check to make sure eggs r not backed up also if so use the baths to help her pass them down to the vent. maggots r normal to see, they will only eat the bad parts. the only thing with them is ya just don't want them inside her vent. keep her bottom as sterile and clean as ya can also try to use somekind of antibacterial soap to help.

keep her in a cool dark place alone to keep her from laying till ya know for sure what is going on and ya make sure there is no pieces broke inside. as far as crop goes i'm wondering if she is gourging to try to help pass an egg or something? the dripping water back out is normal if they eat or drink to much or to fast. how is her eating? everything sounds normal to me for lack of better words, what worries me is possability of shell inside cause that can cause serious damage or possible backed up eggs inside.

if u need anything else jsut pm me and i'll try to help ya through it.
hugs,
silkie

How did this turn out?

Not well. She died yesterday afternoon. I think she ate something that caused the egg breakage that damaged her insides too much.

Sorry Smedge!! I surely did not like the sound of your situation, but had no expertise in that encounter. How old was she? Haystack

Thanks everyone.
She was about 3 years old. My kids named her Peekachu.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Poor Peekachu. Do you have any idea what she ate that may have caused it?

Conroe, TX

Thanks Gwen.
Not sure what, could have been anything. We let them out most every afternoon to roam and forage so there is no telling what she could have picked up.

My first thought with the water filled crop was that she had a fever, which often causes thirst, And, is likely to have been cause by infection from the broken egg. Not sure it would have helped, but I'd have gone with an antibiotic, if the hen seemed intact inside
