This is a bad picture but can anyone tell from this picture just how many Roosters are sitting here? I know of one for sure. Please any opinions very much appreciated.
How many Roosters do you see?
Urp--definitely one (black), possibly two (white) and maybe three (red). They all have red combs and serious wattles. It might depend a little on what breed and how old. My RIR pullets have had serious combs and wattles.
The Ameracauna/Easter Egger? Can't tell without a close up of the comb head on.
How old are they?
4?
The red and white cochins are roos.. if the black is a cochin also.. that's a roo. The EE has quite a bit of red there.. can't tell for sure..
oo wow.. i didn't know that Goldie was an EE. They are just a mixed Bantam set from the farm store so i didn't' know what i had. Everyone picks on Goldie & Ginger which is why i was starting to wonder how many roos i was going to have Those two wander off alone half the time & Cotton & Lily go off alone but come night fall they all want to sleep together. Cotton Candy ( the white one) is most definitely a Roo.. that one i knew for sure.. he crows every time Sage crows but when Cotton started crowing Ginger (the red one) shut up immediately.. I mean she crowed for like 3 days.. this strangled goose sound.. then stopped.. 2 weeks later.. Cotton started in & now Cotton is treating Ginger like he/she is a pullet... unless of course I was watching Ginger bc shehe was cute & stood up to look at me then I'd look away & hear the crow.. so maybe it was Cotton all along.. idk anymore.. Lilly (the little black one..) i have no clue.. never crowed.. follows the others around very meekly, "mothers" my next smaller set that's nearly his/her size. As for age... they are 3 or 4 months.. i can't remember exactly right now. I can get better pics of them. Its hard bc my RIR's had large wattles & large combs so i'm not sure what I'm looking at till they make some noise. I'll put up a better pic tonight when i get home. Thanks tho.
The top picture looks like Goldie has more than one row in her pea comb--but where did those lovely feathered legs come from? I'm guessing roo.
ZZ...anyone?
Silkies are sweeties. They are also great little sitters. They love to hatch out eggs.
I'll try to get a picture with her looking at me.. its not really a row.. its more a blob of comb that's kinda flat.. I've never seen one like it. but then i looked up types & I wasn't sure if it was a pea comb, rose comb or strawberry comb... If I can get hesheit to stand still & actually look at the camera I'll try for a pic of just her head tomorrow.. these were ones I already had from the night before. The roos are attacking hesheit tho. Trying to get ready for a huge rummage sale so its been a bit busy. Especially since I'm sure I've got 3 Welsummer roos now.. & I'm starting to wonder if my EE's are really EE's.. or if he sold me the wrong thing.

I've never had a Silkie hen before.. she's very sweet but she's so small, like the size of a softball currently. She's a bantam but mine before were all one solid color, much bigger than her & her hair on her head doesn't seem to be fluffing correctly.. and yes.. I'm worrying too much....
Ummm...oh, I hate to say this...but....the little Silkie looks like a roo too. They have that neat back-swept do. I am the queen of unintended Silkie roos.
It is a lovely mix of colors though--my first Silkie started out all grey and then developed golden neck feathers--she was beautiful.
My other silkie was a roo & had a huge fluffly front flowing fro on its head.. this is sooo confusing. It was all black & the little girl i babysat named it Lillybug.. As sweet as Silkie is tho i don't care so much if its a roo. It sure is a loud little thing tho. It talks constantly, chirping all the time. The others may need to find new homes tho, they are kinda rude to the hens lately.
Now I see 5 roos! You poor thing!
That EE roo looks like there was a cochin in the mix somewhere? LOL Too funny! It's very interesting looking! I can't say pretty.. but it's WILD lookin.. and I love the color.
I hope you have a LOT of pullets somewhere! Gonna be busy at your place! :)
Catscan and ZZ's!!! I'am not letting you see my new banties! I do not want to hear any bad news about R o o' s. Your the best, but I have my limitations. LOL I'm really sorry Greykyttyn I know they are my friends but WHAT can I say. Ughhhh.
Come on Haystack... Let me see those lil red combs.. LOL
Hey, Hay! Don't shoot the messenger.
Actually, ZZ and I are just a little intoxicated with our newly discovered rooster-detecting super-powers. I am sure we will settle down once the costumes are finished. Nothing like tights and strap on wattles and combs to focus your mind on the job at hand.
LMBO Super Roo detectors! We can spot a roo a mile away! Come on with those pics Haystack.. We know you are trying to hide those wattles..
Why, how nice of y'all to offer your expertise. I'll just pop off now and get individual pictures of all the 38 chicks. I keep trying to figure it out, but I'm not sure of any of them. Might as well add the Black Australorps and the Light Brahmas that I just added. They're all supposed to be pullets, but why take chances? It will be good to know definitively. So far the Turkens I thought were the two (intentional) Roos seem to be pullets, and the prettiest of the pullets is looking Rooish. Sigh. Of course, out of the straight runs there are little pink bits popping up seemlingly everywhere.
44 pictures to follow.
It will be SO nice to know for certain :))
giggle....
I take that back..
Australorps are HARD to guess!!
My roo detector is on the blink.. HeHeHe
I've got 10 more I could throw up here for you to guess at.. I looked at Goldie today & I'm pretty sure its a roo.. & as soon as I ask you about them Lily decides to start crowing his little heart out this morning. I had 4 roosters in the coop crowing at 5 am! idk what I"m going to do with Goldie.. he's kinda on his own. Lilly (needs new name) has his own little set of 4 bantam hens that these boys adopted. They seem to like Ginger & Lilly best tho, Cotton & Goldie just kinda float around the yard. I have 15 Buff Orpington pullets... hopefully 5 EE pullets & 2 definite Welsumer pullets & those 4 little bantams. :) is that enough for the boys? Any one want to guess on my EE's whether they are roos or not?
Bring on the pics! If they are not young chicks.. be sure to get a shot of the comb.. I'd love to guess..
That silkie looks similar to one of mine, she came from Ideal Poultry. When she was a baby she had part of the markings of the partridge silkies, but less defined and not quite the same chocolate colors. I am just guessing here, but I think maybe they are mixed partridge and buff, or partridge and red.
Your Goldie is gorgeous.
from what i see in the pics in pic #1 there is a white cochin roo, red cochin roo(i thought rir at first too but it is feather footed), black roo(cochin? can't see enough to tell). goldie is a defiante buff brahma which is why the rose comb on her she is not an EE and doesn't have a pea comb. i believe that is a pullet but the neck feathers kinda look pointed so that one is iffy but if i had to guess at this point i'd say pullet over all it looks more pullet looking. i'll edit in a sec need to look at pics again....
the silkie is a partridge but not sure sex can't see the front of the face. in the pic with goldie i'd say oegb pullet either white or self blue can't tell with the lighting of the pic.
hope that helps lovely babies u have there. ur cochins r really nice looking.
as an after thought after rereading u have purebreds not mixed birds pictured.

Wow.. Thank you Silkiechick! I love it when I learn something new.. even at the expense of feeling the major DUH... LOL
Do Buff Brahma's come in Bantams? Goldie is huge... but she was out of a bantam box & very tiny as a chick.. as was Cotton Candy.. he was out of the bantam box too but that is one big chicken but then my full size ones are still babies so maybe they will look smaller when the others grow up. I just took more pics this morning but idk if I'll get them up tonight or now. Major rummage sale going on.. so I'm lucky i can currently find my camera.. finding my bed last night was a major undertaking the house is so full of stuff.
The silkie came from a local farm that sells day old chicks... I'm suspecting nothing he has is purebread after seeing what colors i got in chicks.. some of them have a head that looks like one chick & a body that looks like it belongs on another chicken. Unique & pretty ... but still kinda odd looking.. & worrisome that he sold me mixed chickens..
and Thank you! You guys are great for answering questions. I've learned more just in the couple months I've been on here than I ever learned asking questions of people around here that have had chickens for 15 to 20 yrs and your all so very nice.
:) i will def get the pictures! that's my major weakness.. since I'm an amateur photographer.. chickens can't run far & take such great little photos with no complaining!
mine pictured r standards but mike's gram and a friend of ours have them in bantams so yes they come in both sizes for buff, light and dark brahmas. i'd say the bantams r about half the size as the standards easily buffy and bart where huge brahmas. it took me both arms to carry them around, lol. so when grown u should know for sure which it is. ur cochins look bantam to me they look same size as my bantam frizzled flock. the standard cochins i used to have r about 3 times bigger than them.
ur silkies i'd have to see to tell ya if they was mixed or not but the one pictured is a purebred light partridge it looks proper coloring from what i see. some colorations r not straight solid colors so it depends on what color ur birds r, it maybe possible they r pure just from mixed colored flocks too.
dave's is a great place for friends and a world of info and help. i really haven't had time to be on here have had alot of stuff going on but will try to be here more. i know what ya mean my birds r considered exotics here. most people only know what a layer is here or production and meat birds. most don't know anything about birds in this area and if u say chickens r ur pets they look at ya like ya have 3 heads or something.
love to see more pics of ur cuties!!
I really appreciate you taking time to post Silkiechick.. Your knowledge is incredible and valuable here! (even if it gives me a reality check) aaaaaaaaah ha ha ha
I don't think I'm so great.. everyone here has given me a big fat head... too bad it's just full of air.. LOL
Na.. just kidding.. I'm glad to learn new stuff.. I absorb chicken stuff like a sponge... or try to anyway!
Here's a pic of one of the EE's. I love her head coloring but the rest of her doesn't look like it matches. Any idea if this is indeed an EE & is it definitely a pullet?
I think the people here only believe a chicken is for eggs & dinner. A boy i know stopped by with some friends yesterday to see the chickens & was in total shock bc I can pick up my chickens & they will sit on my hand or ride on my shoulder around the yard. His grandma's chickens are spastic & paranoid most of the time. He'd never seen a chicken raised as a pet.
