I received this one in the swap last year labeled Hoya longifolia. While piddling with them today I happened to spot this miniscule red flower. If I'm not mistaken, it is similar, if not identical, to Dischidia rosea. The leaves are rigid and boat-shaped when small, then flatten out as they age and have a prominent mid-vein. Internodes range from a few inches to nearly a foot on some vines. I'll post two pics. Thanks for your help.
Barb
Hoya or Dischidia?
I think your mystery looks more like Dischidiopsis parasitica.... Go to www.dischidia.com and check out Antone's site....
Carol
Thanks, Carol!
Barb, whether Hoya or Dischidia, that is one neat looking plant!
Oh my goodness, Carol ... what a wonderful site, great info and photo's! Thanks so much for the link!
Thanks Lin. I am gravitating more and more toward collecting all the Dischidia I can find. Wish they were available locally. This one is small but putting on a lot of new growth, so I'll send you some cuttings if you like. Wouldn't be many, but at least it would get you another "notch" on your Dischidia belt!! Let me know.
Barb
Dischidia are really FUN to grow....will post some photos later today. They grow beautifully on pieces of wood, tree fern bark, trees etc. Antone showed me how to grow them well: wrap spagnum moss around a piece of wood and tie it down with fishing line or think wire. Then afix the dischidia to it with hairpins or with wire. I just dunk mine in water to water them...and they like growing dry. Really cool little plant.
Looks like several of us are diving into the world of dischidias! I have three - ruscifolia, dischidia sp and vadilii! Love them all! Vidalii, I understand, is suppose to stay in bloom much of the time!
Look forward to adding more in the future!
Oh my goodness Barb, I would love a cutting or two of that one to try, I love the looks of it, but wait until your plant grows some, I'm in no rush. We can do a trade if you'd like. Do you have Dischidia ruscifolia? I don't have an updated trade list but have lots of generic plants ... anything special you like to grow?
D. vidalii is a super bloomer and also puts out lots of seed pods. The one thing about it is that it really resents water...I have killed many trying to be nice!!!
Carol
Sooo cute!
Seed pods!!! I have two "leaves" that don't look like the rest - they're long and skinny....will attach another pic - they'll be to the far right....are they seed pods? If so, what in the heck do I do with them?!?!
Carol, I lost two as cuttings. This is one growing in a shell. Would you grow this one mounted or would you put in coir maybe?
Kelly
That D. vidalii is really really well grown!!! I am so jealous!!! If it is happy, I would let it be...they don't need much room at all.... They do put out alot of seed pods...and I was never able to sprout any (probably kept them too wet). Try taking the seeds when the pod ripens and rubbing them on a wad of spagnum moss that is barely damp. Then I would mist the moss infrequently until they sprout and then mist even less frequently!!!.
I certainly can't take credit....I've had it less than a month, I think... How will I know when the seed pods are ripe? Are those definitely seed pods in the picture?
I just LOVE this little guy! Think my next dischidia will be a hirsuta!
Kelly, Congrats! Those sure look like seed pods to me! I will be curious to hear what those seeds look like, are they teeny little hard seeds or light and feathery like other plants sometimes have (the kind that will blow away in a breeze?)
Keep us posted!
The seeds will blow around...their little hard part being lifted away by its 'parachute'. (A couple of Eriostemma pods have burst somewhere and those puppies are blowing all over the place now)....
Carol
I read somewhere about someone putting hose over the seed pods (was that you, Jan?). Should I do that?
Kelly
Hose works...then you just have to get it out of where it is stuck....
I use scotch tape to tape the pod closed...you can see when it wants to burst open....
