Transferring Photos from Card

I have two questions. I have an Olympus that uses a SM card. While using my card reader it--- (1). Sometimes when I transfer photos it will make a extra copy of that photo. Do you know why?
(2) Let say you have 10 photos you want to transfer all at once. Right now I hit CTRL and hit each one that I want to transfer. Is there a way to hit the first and last and the photos in between will be marked for transfer?
