Hanging 3.5 Inch Pot

Lin, I saw in some string where you wondered about
a small hanging pot.

I use these "orchido P&U B010" net pots for that.
They have holes and are tough.

This is a shepherdii that I took out of its previous and
found a stem loaded with peduncles down in the pot.

I took out that stem (these are the blooms) and put
it into a 3.5 and slipped it into the hanging net.

Alison,

Where do you get those pots? I did a google search and didn't come up with anything.

Thanks. Sarah

Sarah, good question. Where DID I get those?
Probably some orchid or tropical supplier.

I have so much stuff around here it is hard to keep up.
I always use one of those to dip LECA from the soak water
because it is so stout.

I have octagonal net pots which also hang, they are larger.
I'll have to try and think back but maybe too many suppliers
to remember.

That's ok. I can check out orchid suppliers myself. Do the baskets come with the hangers or did you get the hangers separately and add them? This is the first year I'll move my orchids outside for the summer, and I was thinking of poking holes in the existing pots and adding wire hangers, but if I can get the hanging pots like you have, that seems to be a better solution.

You mention LECA. Do you grow your orchids with LECA? I recently got some hydroton and am experimenting with growing hoyas in it. I rooted several cuttings very successfully this way, and am wondering what to do with them next.

Sarah

They do not come with hangers. I always buy hangers in
bulk so I always have a length I like.

I grow some orchids in semi hydro and they love it!
Especially catt's. I only grow one hoya in semi hydro,
bella - the notorious. I grow some aroids in LECA and
some epiphytic ferns.

Put orchids into it when they start to get new growth. For some
of them I use a clear quart deli container and heat up a cheap
screw driver in the stove flame and poke about 4 holes around
the perimeter of the bottom about an inch above the bottom.

I leave them outside all the time during warm enough months.

Alison, Great looking shepherdii ... it has become one of my favorites! Mine is blooming like crazy and I love the fragrance!

I was googling a month or so back and found some of the net pots at different orchid supplier sites. I didn't order them but might just have to give them a try. I joined a Novosel Enterprises co-op last year and got some 6" hanging baskets but that is the smallest I've found. I also got some of the 5" bulb pans: http://www.novoselenterprises.com/products/bulbpans.asp, they are wide and squat (shallow) and I like them a lot.

Thanks for sharing the info, Lin. I need to get some pots and I'll check them out.

Sarah
