What are signs of to much sun? I have a hindu rope that is blooming like crazy but the plant itself looks poor. The leaves are spaced farther apart than I have seen. There are splotchs of what looks like white stuff. And the leaves are lite in color.
hindu rope
The white stuff could be mealybug. This is very common to hoyas especially hindu rope. It is an insect pest. I would shower the whole plant and then use an insecticide. The experts here will chime in with what type to use. If my hoyas are not infected too bad, I will bathe the plant and use a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol and clean off all the white stuff. Be sure that the plant is not exposed to a lot of sunlight during this process until it is dry.
Too much sun bleaches the hoya leaves. You need to move it to bright, indirect light.
HTH.

Sounds like too much sun/light to me. You could dunk the whole vine/leaves in 100% alcohol (rubbing kind) or a mild solution of detergent and water. All of that group of hoyas, including H. carnosas, pubicalyx etc. grow best in low light...minimum water.
Sounds like too much sun to me also. I have a couple of carnosa's and a pubicalyx that have gotten bleached out from being in too much sun. Last year I finally moved them to a covered deck where they get bright light but no direct sun.
I agree with Susan about the white stuff possibly being mealies, compacta seems to be a mealy magnet ... at least here with all the humidity we have. I fill a 5 gal bucket with water and diluted BATS (Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub) and dunk the entire plant. It just takes too long with a large mealy infestation to sit with a q-tip and alcohol. I need to label one of my spray bottles and isopropyl alcohol in it, just for the plants!
