Can this possibly be what I think it is?

Palm Beach Gardens, FL(Zone 10b)

I got two cuttings of this Epiphyllum oxypetalum last spring, I can't believe it could have a bud already. Now how long is my agony...lol, until it blooms? I am so excited I can hardy type! Kim

Yes that is what you think it is. I would say you need to wait 3-5 weeks. And remember that they bloom late at night. Good luck

Well worth the wait. The first time my eppie bloomed I woke Bill up about around 2:30-3:00am (I was up to pee anyway so went out to look). After the grumbling stopped, he had to admit it was beautiful and is now his favorite plant in the yard!

i have a queen of the night climber and ive missed it's blooms every time. ive only seen the remains in the morning. hehe! will see it one day.

Kim: Give us an update on that bud! Did you get to see the flower? My large Epiphyllum Oxypetalum has one bud and I'm watching and waiting ... I am not going to misss this! The bud has grown quickly and I am seeing changes every day!

breeindy: I have a large Epiphyllum hookeri: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/1925/
that I've had since 1976 and I finally got to see flowers for the first time last year! I had no idea it was a night bloomer until I joined DG!

This is my E. oxypetalum with the one bud. Can't wait for the flower as I hear they are very fragrant!

wow that plant looks great plantladylin.
Mine is different but also a white flower. I keep seeing the the buds forming and getting real heavy and i think they snap off before they flower every time, then i see the closed finished buds.hehe! Only last a night i think.

(Zone 1)

The Epi hookeri flowers only last a few hours. When it was blooming last year I stayed up late and kept going out to the backyard with a flashlight to see if the buds had opened yet! They started opening slowly around 10:00 p.m.

I took this photo at about 12:30 a.m. and by 8:00 a.m. they were done and wilted. No fragrance that I could detect at all on E. hookeri. I think this one bloomed in October.

Lin, my hookeri blooms 2-3 times a year and the flowers stay until about 9:30 AM.

(Zone 1)

Wow ... that long? I think my big plant needs more light. It is under a tree in the corner of the backyard and probably not getting enough light. I'm sure mine would bloom more often if I fed it once in awhile! ^_^

(Zone 1)

I just went out to look at Epi. hookeri. I found two buds forming!

... and see the epi leaf leaning up against the tree? Whenever I break off branches of plants I have a tendency to just stick them in the nearest pot or wherever. I don't remember when I broke this one off, maybe a month or two ago. Well, I picked it up, it was barely in much soil because of the huge roots of that camphor tree. And, it has a bud too!

This is the entire plant

I can't believe this has a bud when it only has a teeny nub of a root started! Guess it goes to show how tough plants can be.

Like the zygo cactus. you can break or knock peices of one of them with buds on it and stick it in another pot and it'll flower. I have a heap of zygo cuttings flowering at the moment. I also have a few of these epi type climbing cactus but some haven't flowered and i can't remember what the flowers should look like. Think ones a big red flower? Here's my one i call queen of the night? white flowers!..

Froggy -- Great! Just watch that bud carefully. My plant always blooms when we are out of town! We came back from some family celebrations and had 7 drooping blooms -- missed it again!

I found that if the buds are almost ready you can brake of a "leaf" with bud and take it with you. That is what I did with my winter bloomer when I went to Atlanta, Ga for Christmas, last year. Here is a picture of it blooming, it is sitting in a glass of water.

Sandy, how long will the bloom last in a glass of water? I'd love to pick my epi oxy bloom when it opens and bring it inside ... would be great if it would stay open a few days in the water!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

It depends on the flower. I do not think the epi oxy would only stay open only as long as they do naturally. My winter bloomer naturally stays open a couple of days. Oh and no scent on it. LOL

Thanks Sandy ... I won't be cutting the bloom off then, will just enjoy it on the plant - which reminds me, I need to go out and check on it!

Waiting!!!!!

Getting plumper! Tonight might be the night ... will check again in another hour to see if there's any change!

Good luck. But sorry I will not be able to stay up. Must be up early so I can take the brat for his run.

10:30 p.m. Looks like it's still got a way to go yet, still needs more plumping ... maybe tomorrow night?

Have been trying for three days to post this picture. I am a slow learner -- roflol. When we got home on Monday, this is what we saw. This is a sneaky plant, she even bloomed and my neighbor who was watching missed her. It seems that the Queen is very discreet. Sandy, I saw your beautiful bloom at Christmas that opened in water, however, when we left home, I couldn't tell whether I was getting buds or new leaves. We are planning another short trip and hope that what I am seeing is just new leaves coming out, or we will miss her again -- next year I am planning to STAY PUT during May and June!

The picture did not enlarge so I can not tell you. But here is a picture of a early bud, hope it helps.

My oxypetalum had some teeny new growth's that I was hoping were more buds but it was just little teeny leaves.

No bloom yet?????

(Zone 1)

Sandy, Yes! It bloomed last night! I started another thread showing the progression: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1002283/

My husband even thought it was pretty exciting watching it!

frog_garden/Kim: I didn't mean to take over your thread! Did you get to see your plant bloom? I hope you didn't miss it ... very exciting! Please update us on your plant.

HI y'all. No I am stuck here in Hades unless I win the lottery. Back into the upper 90's again.

We have a Water Oak that is around 50 years old it is dieing. I think we are going to leave the trunk and grown vines on it. To big around to cut even with a chain saw. And then there are all the huge surface roots.
