Is it okay to check cardinal nests?

Chepachet, RI(Zone 5b)

We have a cardinal nest in our burning bush next to the side of our house. I am dying to check on it every now and then, but I know some birds are more tolerant of this than others and the last thing I want to do is cause a problem. Any advice?

Thanks!

Hi Niere, I'm not really sure about nests but seeing how nervous they are with people at the feeders I would be careful.

Would you be able to see it with binoculars?

Not really--the foliage on the burning bush (I know I know, I didn't plant it, but it's huge now) is very dense.

I'll leave it be unless I hear from someone else that it might be okay to have a peek or two. I don't want to upset the nest or it's owners! :D

As a general rule, best not to get too close. Even if you didn't disturb them yourself, there's always the risk of leaving a trail that other predators (cats, jays, etc.) might follow.

I read that cardinals are quick to abandon nests. In fact, last year I checked on a nest and they abandoned with 4 eggs. So I don't check anymore.

Thanks everyone! I will leave them be. :)

Of course, there was my recent incident where she built in a wreath on my front porch. But this pair has been showing an unusual tolerance of me in general.
