We have a room in our garage. We were thinking of making it into a chicken coop and making a hole in the wall so they could go out into the back yard...into a run along side the house..there would be a gate that could be opened to let them into the rest of the yard, when we are outside to watch them. That way, when they are inside they would be in a predator proof room that has a concrete floor. I haven't taken measurements yet..pretty sure it would be large enough for a few hens.
So This is the Plan
I think it is an excellent idea--my old 1920's house has a detached garage with what looks like it was once a pigeon loft attached so the pigeons could be in the garage and then out to the back of he yard.
I was thinking of doing that to our detached garage only i didn't want to cut a hole in the wall so I was doing to make a ramp up & out the window, down the other side into the yard.. :) they'd have to climb a small mountain but I "think" it will work.. now to convince my family I'm not losing my mind.
Sounds like a sane idea to me...
MIne has a hole cut up high in the wall with a platform on the outside for the doves--but I don't see why you couldn't use a window.
Chickens create an aful lot of chicken dust, so I would highlly consider first if there is stuff in the garage that is important to keep clean, such as any tools with motors on them or a nice car. I hate the chicken dust and don't want it around anything I have to work with or running machinery. Just a thought. Haystack
Sounds like a good plan!
LOL chicken dust... thats funny. That garage creates its own dust somehow. you can sweep the floor & 20 minutes later u must sweep again.. The poor lawnmower gets a bath after we use it & still when we go to get it out the next week it looks like it never had one. So dust is not a concern at all. :) But I do see your point very well. I wouldn't' want my pretty lil sports car parked in there with the chickens. Thankfully its just a junk garage & a place for the lawnmower & quad. Ideally if i could afford it I want the cute lil red barn thingy at Home Depot. the one that's about 10x10 with a 10 or 12 ft ceiling. Need to build my house before the chickens are living better than I am.
Well, the chicken dust, made my DH against the idea..he wants to build a chicken tractor. Like this one:
