Mekos: how are you doing? My waterlily I started after yours, so are you having similar results?

wow flower! those are some monsters. looks like someone has the hang of this vivap stuff. : )

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

Haha! look who's talkin! Any pics of your progress available?

Tucson, AZ

well, #1 was trashed since it stalled. no roots and all of the pad had deteriorated. #2 was put outside a couple of days ago. no it doesn't look like it's happy. i think it might have been shock from the water temp change. outside water is still cool to the touch. i think it is over 70º at night though.

now i am just waiting for #3 to start doing something...

perhaps, i need a larger tank inside the house so that they can get more mature before moving them outside.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh, bummer tucson! You know the one I referred to as being stalled hasn't changed. It's just this tiny ball of leaves that never grew any stems so they don't reach the water's surface. I wonder if it's worth keeping it around and wait for a miracle. Thing is, it's so small, it doesnt take up any room, so I keep thinking-what the heck! I have also been thinking about a larger container. Then I'll need more lights to keep the temp similarly hot.

My water got too hot and cooked mine. Sorry. I guess I'm just not doing so good. I broke down and ordered a tropical- green smoke- water lily, and GOD bless her, Mittsy is sending me some hardy water lilies, so maybe I'll get some, one way or the other. Just not Tina. And she is so pretty. Have you got back from your trip yet? I've been missing you, flower. The green smoke was so broken when it came, it died 2 days later and they are sending me another one now. But it was so pretty. I forced open a bloom pod since it was going to die anyway, and it was blueish/green.

i haven't been having much luck either. i think the water outside is too cool. i have node on a pad still attached to tina the appears to want to vivap. i will leave it alone and see what it does. i think for right now i will just wait for blooms for tina. perhaps, i need a large vivap tank so that they can mature in warm water and not have to make the transition early.

The largest vivap pad I have, put out several tiny leaves now and starting to look like a 'real' waterlily. I found a tiny basket that another water plant came in and planted it in there. I planted it really shallowly and added some sand on top to wieght it down since it doesn't have hardly any roots yet.
I don't know what happened to the other smaller one lol . It totally dissappeared!
I wonder if something ate it since it was outside? I wouldn't put it past these onery squirrels to take it.
I am gonna wait till the mother Panama Pacific quits blooming then pull off a few more pads.
Has anyone tried any waterlilies that aren't on the 'vivap list' for easy propagation?

When I get a water thermometer so I can control the temp. I'm going to try again with the green smoke and some lotus pads. It's hot outside now, probably will do better and not need bulb for heat, just gonna try the blue lights. Let you know in a couple days when I get the thermom.

Tucson, AZ

nope...i haven't tried any other lilies. i only have tina. :)

she is sending up a bud. i am doing the water lily dance. good thing i don't have a cam in my garden. haha!

When I went to my mailbox today, guess what I found? A package said" I'm a baby TINA, Please dont fry me...I'm not food" And a BABY TINA GIRL inside. FLOWER, YOU are an ANGEL!!!!!I'm just loving all over my new baby girl. Her name is Baby Girl Tina. I'll send you pictures as soon as she makes her appearance to the top of the water pond on my deck, that I use to start some plants. She is so perfect! I'M so happy. Thank you , and for the Arrowhead. He has a home as well. I'm going to put him in a hanging basket. He's beautiful, too. I got so many plants today and it's POURING RAIN. Thanks every one. Mekos

Tucson, AZ

that's a nice surprise mekos. and a cut note flower. "don't fry me..." haha!

mekos you and i could be on to something. hmmm...maybe not. i don't know if boiled lily pad will pass as a delicacy. LOL enjoy your new kids.

Tucson, As soon as my green smoke gets here (again) I'm going to send you a pad and one from my lotus so you can try them.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi guys! I guess the experiment hasn't been going so well for you guys? Well, here's something: the baby Tina that was doing well I sent to Mekos (haha, I know that was pretty funny, since she fried the Tina pads). I then had to go on a business trip for 3 days and didn't know what to do with the light/ pads. I was considering putting it outside, but the light and heat is unpredictable and has stumped my other pad. So I left the light on, put it further away from the water (about 2.5 inches instead of 1/8 of an inch) and I was sooooo curious to see what had happened when I got back! Well, 2 of the 3 pads are bigger than the baby I sent Mekos! The third looks stumped/messed up. I was amazed! It worked great! The water temp was lukewarm and it apparantly did the trick! So I will take pics soon. I am going to try to set up a bigger tub for them to mature! I need another bulb for that, I think... just because there will be so much more water to heat/ light. Hope Mekos's baby and mine will mature soon! No flowerbuds have been put out yet. I'm comparing to the 'studyguide' I use as my guiding light! (link at top of page)
So excited to hear from you guys! I've missed that!

We missed you too, Flower. Glad to hear the pads worked. You're inspiration.

I'll try to take pics tomorrow; one of Tina's babies is getting to toddler stage. Because I will be going on a trip thursday, I think I'm putting it plus the other baby (the hardy one Mekos) in the shallow area of my pond. The hardy baby has not changed in size really, although I 'trained' it to get the stems to get longer, haha! I think it's hard to get them from toddlerhood to teenager stage. Getting them to grow is hard! Well, it's all them I suppose. The stumped one is really stumped. The leaves Tina's baby nodes first send out seem to be mottled while the later ones mimic the mature ones in color. The stumped one only gives mottled leaves and puts them out at max 1 inch. The other that has been in the water/light box for just as long now has 6-7 inch stems. I can't wait for its first bud! How's the waterlily dance going?
Froukje

My green smoke bit the dust. Baby girl tina is making new pads, and something is trying to bloom. Not sure if it's a water lily or lotus. Big bloom it looks like. Maybe will open in a day or so.I'm going to take a picture of it. They dragonfly place is shipping another green smoke to me and Mittsy sent me some of her water lilies, so things are looking better. I'm working on a lattice awning for the small pond to try and stop some algea. Some people say the green water is from too much sun, so the awning will give a place for the vines to grow and make shade. When that is finished, pictures too.I did find the blue sky vine today and a man is sending me some gloriosa lily to put out there. And found some real interesting vine seeds I planted to start some. Your surprise is coming along nicely, will be ready when you get back from your trip. So have fun and come back soon.

my tina had three bud below the surface. i can't wait for her to bloom. meanwhile, she has started producing a lil' baby tina on one of the attached pads. i will just leave it there and see what happens. the other one is floating and still alive. i would be nice to push them to grow faster with the heat lamp. however, at this point i'll take what i can get from just letting them sit outside.

have a safe trip flower! hey mekos!

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

I'd love to see pics of both of yours! Cool that Tina is making a vivap baby righ there in the pond! My Tina hasn't done that yet. The Tina bloom that came up just today is soo small, I am wondering if I overtaxed it by taking so many leaves off of it. She's not been doing so well. I really should start fertilizing her.

Just make sure the fertilizer tablets go deep in the soil so not to burn her little roots.

Thanks for the tip! Here's some pictures: The setup

Here's a pic from the side showing the length of the stems and the pads- one is starting, the other is stumped.

Here they are out of the water. Am I boring you yet? :D Right one is Tina.

Thumbnail by flowerehj

Looks great! Good luck with them. They should grow up a storm while youre away. Mine always do better when I'm not watching over them (and cooking them.) Here is baby girl tina with her new pads, sitting right beside a baby water lotus.

Their new home in the pond, since I'm heading out of town. Closer one is Tina.
I really hope they will do well, because I'm not going to be around to monitor!

Thumbnail by flowerehj

My baby girl has been in a tub just like that since she arrived so I couldn't cook her. And she is doing fine.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

No cooking allowed! haha! Well, that's actually my pond! It was here when I moved here 9 years ago, and only now did I pay it any attention. I cleaned it, put plants in it, etc.

wow! looks like someone knows what they are doing. congrats froukje! please pass some magic this way...

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

Here's what it looked like before (I'm ashamed)

Thumbnail by flowerehj

I thought about that but did you see that pond and all the blooms(blue not algea) hanging there? That was beautiful. Mine gets full sun ALL day. It will still get sun, but filtered. Large hole lattice.

Tucson and Mekos- I'm still not sure how you managed to cook yours? When I was using the smaller tub I had the 60 watt lightbulb like 1/8 inch away from the water surface and it got the water real hot, but it just got the babies growing faster. And I would have had 3 babies same size or bigger than the one I showed you, but I sent 2 to people who didn't manage to do the vivip leaves. I felt bad for them. But it would have been better if I had just done the pads myself because now I took like 11 leaves off of Tina in a short time and I think I traumatized her :( The big mommy I mean. Her bloom currently is only about half the size of what they used to be.... Oh well. I'll try to buy some fertilizer when I get back from my trip.
Tucson- like you said before, when it comes to growing the babies, it's all Tina!
Froukje

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

yes, the lattice is beautiful! I'm thinking about building one next to our mother in law cottage to provide shade and so I can have a place to put vines that take full sun! It's so exciting! So let me know what you'll use and how it does.

Tucson, AZ

haha! you would have to hold me to that. : ) well, i screwed up somewhere...

I didn't have a thermometer to test water temp, so I put saran wrap around the top to cover it and keep in the heat. WALA.---- COOKED TINA. Also cooked my lotus and a few others.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm not holding you to it, don't worry :D LOL

So 1 evening I found a website where they listed all the vivap waterlilies (http://www.victoria-adventure.org/waterlilies_images/vivips/page1.html)
And I cross-referenced it with Davesgarden plantfiles to see who might have these. Well, apparently nobody does except 2 people who have a store (adavisus has just about every variety vivip and nesteggfarms has a lot also because he/she posted a lot of pics to the files) . I was hoping to find people with other varieties vivips than us and trade them some pads (whenever Tina recovers). I guess we should just buy some vivips so we can share :D. However, what I don't like is that almost all the vivips are similar in coloring as Tina. And of course I would like some different kinds of color in my pond. Here are the most promising ones in terms of different color: Ganna Walsa (light pink), August Koch (light blue) and Bagdad (blue). But here's a new one: SOME HARDY WATERLILIES ARE ABLE TO MAKE BABIES FROM FLOWERS! Wow! Check out the website I mentioned above! Isn't that amazing? I haven't checked on any of the waterlilies in that section of the website yet. The top part with the huge list of tropical vivips took me a whole evening! But maybe we can do something with that? Exciting eh?

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

No saran wrap necessary when you have the light pointing at it! haha! Sorry you cooked your others as well.

Tucson, AZ

wow! i remember seeing this page a while back. that's pretty freaky of the one vivap from the flower! i totally forgot about this line, "simply left to float where eventually the developing tuber will cause the plant to sink to the bottom and become established." guess that's what i will let it do. we have a long growing season in the desert. i guess they should be established by autumn.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes, I think the plant will do that- sink to the bottom when it has developed enough bulk. But I think that this way you might get very few babies while the lamp method seems to yield much higher results. Of course, letting Tina do it by herself is the low maintenance way to do it! :D I just got impatient. Because my pads get yellow and nasty and still none of the nodes grow into plantlets....
