Thought some of you might be interested in this - free seminars, specials on plants and products, door prizes, refreshments, etc.
Merrifield Gainesville open house today thru Sunday
Ohhhhhh me thinks I may HAVE to head that way...
Uhu - looks like a good one! Call me if you go ^_^
I've been going there almost weekly for months. I have been enjoying the free seminars, and watching them ramp up their inventory getting ready for the grand opening. I was there a week ago with a neighbor friend, and the plant selection (both inside the greenhouse and in the outdoor sections) was great. Chantell - One of the things I was eyeing was a heliotrope trained into a standard - the scent was wonderful. I talked myself out of it because I have trouble keeping potted plants alive, and thought I'd be throwing away the money. They are extremely dog friendly there too - even have a dog park - so don't hesitate to bring your canine buddies along! Terri
It sure sounds like they have some nice things going on for the open house. I won't get there for it but I sure plan to stop by there next time I'm in Manassas visiting Mom.
I've always like Merrifield. I'm going back to their original little store that actually was in Merrifield back in the late 70s, early 80s. They're a bit expensive but they have very nice plants and so many things you can't find anywhere else. Even their seed selection is nifty.
Be sure to check for euphorbias, Chantell. Maybe they've gotten in some of the new ones.

Blasted woman stood me up for lunch, can ya believe it!?!!?
When we went to Merrifields in Fairfax they had an awesome selection of "mini" plants, meant for bonsais etc. I'm thinking a large, shallow planter will look nice with several "minis" grouped together, toss in some gravel & moss and we'll have mini-gardens to tend to this winter :-)
The nerve!!!! LOL There's a whole forum on mini gardens here. Did you know?
I just found that forum - it's giving me some ideas, but, no gnomes or fairies!
Hmph....she's tellin' tales, Diane...don't believe a word of it...LOL
Let me get this straight though...gnomes and fairies but no diver in the tank...hmmmm......
No, I do NOT want gnomes & fairies!
And I'm NOT telling tales, she ditched me!
I think she said no gnomes or fairies. I'm shocked, though. I thought gnomes and fairies were from your native land, Bec. LOL
LOL - harumph...we do NOT have gnomes & fairies - we have NISSE & TROLL - too cold for fairies!
Chantell, go read the d-mail I sent you RIGHT NOW.
Sorry for hijacking, this is something she needs to see. I can't believe she stood you up, Bec. Very shocking behavior. :>O
Nisse, troll, gnomes, fairies, a small mythical being by any other name is still a small mythical being. LOL
Nope, Nisse & Trolls are as real as you & me....nothing mythical about them :-)
Excuuuuuuuse me. Actual small beings that inspire myths and folk tales. Boy are my former archetypal lit crit professors in for a shock. LOL
Just tell 'em you got it straight from a "real Norwegian" - and there are many, many sizes of Trolls, from small to enormous! They normally live under bridges, but have been known to live in mountain caverns as well :-) I grew up with a family of Trolls living right up in the hill from my house - Albertine, Albert & their 2 children, Konstanse & Albert Jr.(who by now must be grown-up trolls!) Gramma had a troll under the bridge leading to the barn...scared the begeebees out of me ^_^
I'd really like to see your troll photos. snicker
Aha - but, I do have photos of their homes, both the bridge at Grammas and the cavern at my childhood home! And I have several Trolls hanging out in my office bookcase! Pictures will follow :-)
Interesting tidbit - JRR. Tolkien based a lot of his characters on Scandinavian/Northern European Mythology :-)

I know. Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and literature was carved into rocks, I got a degree in English lit and my specialty was archetypal criticism, which involves more than most humans want to know about myths, folk tales, fairy tales and the use of mythic or archetypal symbols and patterns in literature.
A lot of the classic English fairy and folk figures are directly based on Nordic and Germanic ones thanks to invaders and eventually settlers from those regions.
Anyway, I was hoping for some actual photos of the real in the flesh living and breathing trolls. Soooooooo, trolls in the bookcase but not in the garden? Poor trolls, stuck away on a dusty bookshelf, never a breath of fresh air, taken completely out of their native habitat of bridges and caves. sigh I'm calling the SPCT.
LOL - well I have known some true "trolls" in my life...don't really want pictures of them though!
Do I even wanna know what SPCT stands for!?!?! My trolls are purely indoor trolls, they explode when the sun shines on them :-) (and my bookshelf is soooo not dusty! LOL)
Bridge where Gramma's troll lived/s :-)
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Trolls.
Now that's a troll bridge if I've ever seen one.
My ears were burning....hmph!!!
All this talk of trolls...thought they lived under my bed not a bridge? And I'm quite certain I've seen some driving I95...I'll try to get some pics next time....LOL
They should have been. LOL We thought a troll had run off with you, probably one of those I-95 trolls.
Much as my taste in the opposite gender is diverse...I've never had the overwhelming urge to date a troll...LOL
I haven't intended to, but I sure have. :>}
ROTFLBO - I was just gonna pipe in with I have known a few in my time...probably dated a few before I met "the one" ^_^
Posted this in the other thread meant to put it here.... http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2489/
