Our little brown tabby, and self-appointed chief string killer, was diagnosed with asthma this winter. She has been on Terbutyline for four months plus she was on a tapered dose of Prednisone for three weeks. The terbutyline was effective at first but now she is coughing a lot more. The prednisone helped at first but it gave her a bad case of diarhea. She is also sneezing a lot right now and I think she has pollen allergies that are making her asthma worse.
I am in the same situation. I have asthma and allergies which I take anti-histamines for and I recieve desensitization shots every two weeks (and yes, two of the four shots are for cat hair.)
So my question is what can we do for her at home or ask the vet about? I am supposed to talk to the vet tomorrow. So far we have done the following things to help her:
-She is an indoor cat with limited outdoor on-leash priviledges
-She is on a grain free diet (Taste of the wild) because she also has a corn allergy
-We use swheetscoop litter to keep the dust down.
-We don't use scented cleaning products around the house because I am pretty sensitive to those.
-We have replaced the carpet with bamboo excpet in the bedrooms and we're planning to do the bedrooms in the next year.
-The humidity in our house is very low so mold, mildew, and dust mites aren't a problem. With the humidifiers running and the laundry hanging inside and a thunderstorm we might hit 50% humidity but most of the time it's lower.
-We don't smoke or have a fireplace or use candles. The only smoke in the house is ocassionally from cooking.
