Sort Ascending?

I cut and pasted a list of flowers on my Word.
I chose sort ascending and hit the button
The list turned black and when I hit go, nothing happened except the list became normal again, but not sorted.

I guess I need to be told the procedure for "Sort" again. I used to be able to do it.
