Flock of Cedar Waxings Visited our Crabapple

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

What a wonderful surprise that was.
My husband and I just happened to be outside when one flew to the tree... then another... and another. At one point there had to have been at least a dozen.

Matt had time to go into the house and get the camera while they munched on green crabapples
(makes you pucker just thinking about it)

He couldn't get a photo that really showed how many there were, mostly ones and twos.

This guy let Matt get pretty close

Then just as suddenly as they came, they flew away.
Anyway I was thrilled, I've always wanted a Cedar Waxing to visit my garden.

I love the Waxwings. Among my favorite birds. They are very temporary residents here. I had a couple of flocks that hung around for a few days in April, but long gone now.

I posted some pics here, but I'll post a couple more. Note how they eat the berries whole. That Holly was picked clean in 2 days.

Wait a minute... They are "waxwings" not waxings?
Silly me... I wonder why they are called wax-anything... perhaps because their feathers are so smooth looking?

Anyway your photos are soooo cool!
I don't know if Cedar Waxwings are temporarily passing through Ohio or if they are regulars.
I just think they are gorgeous.

Here's an even dozen of the darlings.....I get them during the winter here. They are so cool!

pelletory,
Yeah I thought it was pretty nifty... I hope they return (as long as they stay away from the blue berries)

Dovey - the na,me "Waxwing" is due to the red tip of the wing feather. it looks as if it was dipped into red wax.

Ahhh, thank you Birdie, I'm always interested in learning those kind of things.

To all of you.....Thanks for the photos. I love the Waxwings! Beautiful.

Thank you Birdie! I didn't know how they got their name. Lucky lucky you Dovey. They are one of my favorites. I always thought they looked like little bandits, but I like Cleopatra eyes much better.

That is an awesome picture gardenpom. Lucky you Dovey. Seen them for the first time two years ago on vacation. We are going back to the same place this year. Upper p in Michigan. The walking path was next to the lake there and there were hundreds of berry bushes with as many waxwings. My camera then did not have good closeup features so my pictures did not turn out but the memories remain. They are such handsome birds. Then last summer they were in the neighbors shrub right behind my fence. My daughter thought i was nuts because I got so excited. they never came back though.

I'm sure if I had witnesses they would also think I was nuts too Lynn... I feel honored when a "handsome bird" (great term) visits my garden.

only a fellow 'birder' could understand the excitement we feel.
