Veggietrader

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Here is an interesting venture just recently introduced. It is designed as a way gardeners can swap excess produce for something different in another person's nearby garden. People who don't garden or have nothing to swap can offer to buy or barter. The setup is quite new and may not yet be operating everywhere, but is worth investigating -

Thanks for posting Yuska. I signed up and did a listing. Nobody else within 50 miles but maybe it will grow. It's a great concept that I'd love to participate in.

Great idea. I signed up too and found one person in my general area. A great way to barter for veggies as well as garden supplies, etc. Thanks for the tip.

I had a hit on my first listing last night. That was less than 24 hours and I was very surprised because it didn't look like anyone was in my area. Just exchanged initial messages so far but it is both exciting and worrisome. I have a high value crop now (tomatoes) and the other guy won't have his (pecans) until the fall. Should I trust?

there is nothing in my area or within 100 miles of me :(

Wow....quicker results than I would have expected. My instinct says that gardeners are basically trustworthy people and I'd be inclined to trust. At the same time, you might want to make the size of your initial delivery fairly modest, and follow the suggestions of the founders and meet at a neutral place to get acquainted before having anyone come to your home.
Also, save the fellow's e-mail address to report to the Veggietrader site in the event he doesn't follow through properly. The only correction would be removal from membership, but at least action would be taken.

I too registered, though I won't be able to offer until the fig crops ripen.

Be sure to look at the site's blog and the tie-in articles carried there.

Keeping fingers crossed that all goes well........
