Does Anyone Have Wyandotte Chickens?

I was looking at different breeds and this one caught my eye.

and what about Wheaton Marans? They are gorgeous!

I hatched a Silver-laced Wyandotte rooster. He was very sweet...but he was the only one to hatch so I had to find him a new home. I've heard that the Silver-laced are the best layers among the Wyandottes.

Thanks I am looking at the different kinds of chickens and I see some, and think: "Oh! I want those!" and I keep looking and see another kind: "or them..." I want a quiet, docile chicken .

Speckled Sussex are very sweet. And pretty. Much prettier than I thought just looking at pictures of them. The ones I hatched had the softest feathers and came from quite large eggs.

Faverolles are also gentle and docile--but I didn't think mine were very interesting. Cochins are also very sweet and gentle....like big, soft, Persian cats.

Does it matter if they have feathered feet?

We have silver-laced Wyandottes but have found them to be pretty aggressive, especially to chicks when we were introducing the newest batch last spring. The White Rocks were aggressive, too, but not as bad. We tried Salmon Faverolles and Cuckoo Marans last year. We liked them both but they were bullied so badly by our older hens that we had a high mortality rate; from a straight run of 25 we only have one Salmon Faverolle hen, one SF rooster, and one Cuckoo Maran hen left! We've never had that kind of problem before. Two more of the Cuckoo Maran hens made it to adult size and then were found lying dead in the henhouse one morning, several weeks apart. We're planning to keep the chicks separate for a longer period this year and see if that helps.

The SFs are very sweet and timid, and look like little owls. The Cuckoo Marans are nice birds and grow quickly to a good size. We may do them again this year.

My opinion. lol, I like the wyandottes, their patterns are so solidily bold they look as if someone did a paint-by-number and stayed in the lines. As for personality.. they have their own, and they usually keep to themselves. They aren't much for a jump on your lap and cuddle. They do lay a nice large egg. They stay warm in the winter. They have a nice "frost proof" comb. Everything you want in a chicken except a best friend. I find they are NOT lap pets. They never let their curiosity get the best of them.. a refined bird.. they don't laugh easy..
Around here the cochrins are the friendliest with Timmy the rooster wanting to be a dog.. follows you everywhere while his harem follows him.. dh laughs as I do my chores.. the chicken pied-piper.. I walk to the sheep field and marching behind me.. a dozen chickens!
