I have a NOID Brug cutting that was given to me.I've rooted it,planted it and here is a pic from 4-24-09.
My First Brug......Am I doing it right?
When should it bloom?Does it have to get so big bfore it will bloom?
synda,
Are you familiar with what a "Y" is? A Brug grown from seed will grow mainly as a single stalk until it's genetic makeup tells it to produce a "Y" (The single trunk splits into two identical branches. Scroll down to Flower form this link. The photo of a shredded bloom shows what I "Y" looks like.
http://www.abads.net/Anatomy/ ) Once the plant has produced that "Y", it will start to produce buds. Cuttings taken from above the "Y" will form buds sooner than cuttings taken from below the original "Y". Depending on whether your cutting came from above or below the "Y", you may get buds and blooms soon, later this summer, fall or even next year. Brugs can not be forced to produce "Y"s no matter how much phosphate you add. (Phosphates don't travel much through the soil. It binds close to the surface.) Use a complete liquid fertilizer and use it at least once a week. Keeping the Brug healthy and growing will get you blooms. Some Brugs will get over 6' tall before they "Y" and some will "Y" sooner. You can tell whether your cutting came from a vegetative section or from a flowering section. Look at the photoss under the leaf section in the link I provided. If the leaves are asymmetrical, your cutting is from above the "Y".
It is natural for dormant leaf buds to awaken and start to grow. Dont cut them off as the more leaf surface your plant has the faster your plant will grow. Over time your Brug will also send up shoots from the ground. These are the shoots to grow as standards.
Thank You sooooooooo much ,I have been asking for some time now what a "Y" looks like and couldn't get any one to show me......

I'm a newbie to brugs, too. You said:

What does "grow as a standard" mean?
Thanks,
Natasha
Grow as a standard means having a single trunk, tree-like rather than shrubby with lots of branches coming up from the ground or close to the ground. Seedlings and shoots coming up from the ground tend to grow very straight. Growth from above the "Y" tends to zig zag a bit. This is a photo of my mother's Dr. Seuss growing as a standard in the ground.
WOW! That Dr. Seuss is gorgeous! How old is it ???

(wishing she was in a warmer zone :) )
It was between 5 and 6 years old when an unusually cold winter killed it down to the ground.
